For the first time in his career, Toni Kroos has been named German Footballer of the Year for 2018.

The award is determined by a poll of German football journalists from the German publication Kicker and the Association of German Sports Journalists, with all German players abroad and players in Germany are eligible for selections.

The 28-year-old Real Madrid midfielder has received 185 votes while Freiburg's Nils Petersen comes second with 39 and Schalke 04's Naldo is placed third with 38.

"It is and will remain a great honor for me to be crowned Footballer of the Year," says Kroos. "That's a price you do not get so easily - and most importantly not everyone can get it."

"(It is) a nice endorsement of the path that you have chosen as a footballer and the decisions that you have made."

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Jürgen Klinsmann, Oliver Kahn, Michael Ballack, Miroslav Klose, Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and co. are previous winners of German Footballer of the Year.

Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes was selected as German Coach of the Year with 91 votes), beating Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco by just two votes.

"I am very happy that I have been voted as the Coach of the Year by journalists," says Heynckes.

"But my big compliment goes to those who did not vote for me, because there are many good young coaches in the Bundesliga who deserve this honor - and of course Christian Streich of Freiburg."
