Ahead of the summer of 2019 there was a lot of talk about a new era at Real Madrid, an evolution if you will, yet as we approach the start of the LaLiga Santander season, there is a familiar feel about the defence at Valdebebas.
Despite this level of cohesion in the ranks, Los Blancos again looked disjointed in the pre-season friendly defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, and it was only the brilliance of Keylor Navas that kept the score respectable.
Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Marcelo all started the match, a combination that has been in place for seven years has seen some of the club's greatest ever triumphs arrive.
Yet, there is an argument to be made that this defensive line, which first line up to play together on March 9, 2014, have run their course as a unit.
Once you achieve so much success, there always needs to be a freshening of the decks, and despite the arrival of Eder Militao, that hasn't yet happened, as Jesus Vallejo discovered.
Carvajal is so consistent, he holds the position of right back completely to himself, he has seen off competition from Alvaro Arbeloa, Danilo and now Alvaro Odriozola, and only injuries stop him reaching his best level.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Marcelo on the left, with the Brazilian's sloppiness continuing to cost Los Merengues dearly.
At his best he was a driving attacking force under Zidane's watchful eye, yet Ferland Mendy will feel confident about taking the place from him.
Ramos and Varane are a fine pairing, bringing out the best in each other, yet with Pepe having left and Nacho Fernandez having failed to secure a spot in the centre, the duo continue to play together without much rotation.
Varane had an awful 2018/19 season, as many of France's World Cup winners did, but he continues to have Zidane's confidence, even if the pre-season performances have been poor.
It's unfortunate that this is the case, but in football your most recent results are your most important.
The three successive Champions League triumphs where this defensive setup ruled the continent are firmly in the rear-view mirror, the reality is that Los Blancos slumped to a first knockout round elimination at the hands of Ajax and finished 19 points behind Barcelona in LaLiga Santander.
Following on from this they've suffered humiliating results in pre-season, and that's what is in the forefront of people's minds, causing them to question whether the club can continue with what has been one of the greatest defensive structures in the modern game.

My starting 11 would be jovic, hazard, bale, kroos, modric, casemiro, Marcelo (he can do better he just needs a little time plus it’s just an pre season we Madrid do it well in real game and big cups) , Ramos, varane, carvajal
No he got this he needed little time he needs to get used to Hazard style of playing cause he understood Ronaldo now he needs to understand hazard

I think Coach Solari judgement on Marcelo was right, most of our defect in the games Marcelo played last season came from the left back. He have been one of the best left back in RMFC and the world but frankly his performance have been very poor since last season. Marcelo is a serious problem for RMFC defense. There was no need to sell Sergio R. who was more zealous to play for the team. Very costly mistake Zizou.
yeah bro you are right about this they should have sold marcelo and kept theo

Carvajal seems to me one of the most overrated players I've seen, just because he plays in Madrid. A lot of passion, a lot of Spain and a supernatural ear, but little quality and play. Ramos and Marcelo: former footballers and Varana is not up to scratch. With those wicks, what basket does Madrid want to make? And Zidane without knowing anything. If Barça and Atletie start the league well and get 7 - 8 points away, Zidane doesn't eat the nougat.
I guess u don't really watch carvajal

I recognize that I was from Courtois, but Keylor is winning me even if it doesn't matter because the headline will be the Belgian. Carvajal no longer has the level of 2 years ago, Varane has a more stagnant pair, Ramos should have gone to China this summer and brought Koulibaly into James, and Marcelo ... there are plenty of words, he should have stayed reguilòn and fight a position with mendy. With this defense it is impossible to opt for anything, and if the front and midfield do not help then even less. My 11 would be this: Keylor- Carvajal-Varane-Militao-Mendy-Casemiro-Pogba-James- Hazard- Jovic and Rodrygo or Vinicius.
since Pogba is not around and the chances of buying him now is very slim, who do u want to replace Pogba in your squad?

This defensive line needs to change. The players are prime past and predictable now. This looks good

Mendy for Regulion and this defensive lineup would be amazing. for time being koulibaly is not with us so replace him with carvajal/varane.

Varane out Eder in
have u seen how eder plays ? I am not criticizing him but let's see how he does in a new league. Varane has proved himself in club as well as country. let eder walk in and show what he can do. let them compete and then decide who should be in and who should be benched.

I started playing football 1 years ago after the FIFA World Cup 2018. when Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Spain. I like him as the best player on the planet. and Ronaldo joined juventus for 2018-19 season and other seasons. so I don't know much about real Madrid when Ronaldo was in Madrid. i am 13 years old.
good to hear boy. obviously he is a great player.
