Onana 'offered eye-watering Man Utd escape route' as Amorim plots overhaul

Andre Onana has endured a poor second season with Manchester United and the former Inter Milan goalkeeper is now being tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer with suitors already suggested

Andre Onana could turn to Saudi Arabia to end his Manchester United nightmare with a replacement already found. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has endured a difficult two-year spell at Old Trafford since being signed for £47m from Inter Milan.

Onana has made a series of high-profile errors including two in last week’s Europa League stalemate with French side Lyon. That came after he had been drawn into a bitter war of words with former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic.

United boss Ruben Amorim then made the shock decision to drop Onana entirely from his squad for the weekend’s defeat to Newcastle and it now appears that an exit could become a realistic opportunity for Onana. According to The Sun, Saudi clubs have long-term interest in the goalkeeper and that remains the same heading into the summer transfer window.

He recently changed agent from Goal Management to LIAN Sports, while Onana was reportedly left uncomfortable with a considerable wage drop he was forced to stomach upon United failing to qualify for the Champions League. And it appears that United could already be preparing for his departure with reported interest in Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Despite the current situation, there are a few speedbumps to a potential exit. Onana is currently not looking to quit Old Trafford and is determined to turn the tide.

He also still has three years left on his deal and a £26.3m book value, as per The Athletic, meaning the club need to receive in excess of that for his sale to not be considered a loss - something that would be a disaster for United’s PSR compliance. A loan would be the most likely route out of Old Trafford but it remains to be seen if any of the parties at the heart of a potential deal are open to that.

For the time being, Onana will be aiming to get his career back on track. United boss Amorim confirmed that his omission against Newcastle was just a temporary move.

"Of course, you have to see the context," Amorim told Sky Sports. "It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

"Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect. I think he was okay [about it] because I explained and then, you don't need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation.

"It's a normal situation," he added. "You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important.

“It's for just one game and we give Altay an opportunity, he deserves it also and then, again, tomorrow is a new life and we will prepare for the next one."
