One mistake from Zidane has cost Real Madrid one trophy

Real Sociedad took advantage of the Copa del Rey's new one-legged format to come to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and beat Real Madrid 4-3, thus securing their place in the last four.

La Real even had leads of 3-0 and 4-1 on the night, yet in spite of the great performance by Imanol Alguacil's side, many questions need to be asked of Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman rang the changes for Thursday night's match and it backfired, with Los Blancos not having the same rhythm and understanding that they had in the matches previous.

It's easy to say now, yes, but Zidane made a clear mistake with his XI.

The likes of Marcelo and James Rodriguez came in, as well as a few peripheral members of the squad, and Real Madrid paid the heaviest price: elimination.

Just as Zidane is often praised (and rightfully so), this time he should be criticised for a risky decision that has cost his side their first major trophy of the season.

The Bernabeu applauded Martin Odegaard, but they should have applauded the whole Real Sociedad team, not just him.

It was a great team performance by La Real, who played like they were in fact the home team at times, in what is a night that their supporters will never forget.

With Mirandes, Granada and either Athletic Club or Barcelona to meet in the semi-finals, La Real will be fancying their chances of lifting the Copa this season.

Of all the Real Sociedad players, one who really stood out was Alex Isak.

The 20-year-old scored two goals and had another ruled out, but in truth he could have left the Bernabeu with five or six.

The first of these, to make it 2-0, was an exceptional volley that left Alphonse Areola flat-footed in his goal. What a strike!

At the Bernabeu, there were plenty of murmurs around the ground with regard to Marcelo.

He used to be able to switch the light on and inspire Real Madrid, but now there's only darkness.

Marcelo even got on the scoresheet, but it's clear that something has changed.

Odegaard will play for Real Madrid, but right now he's a Real Sociedad player and he was able to score against his parent club at the Bernabeu.

The ball came to him on the edge of the area after Isak's shot was saved by Areola and he simply fired a shot that squeezed through the Frenchman's legs, yet what was noticeable about it is that he did not celebrate afterwards.

Odegaard left the pitch to a standing ovation, too.

Areola made a mistake with Odegaard's goal.

He was able to quickly respond to Isak's effort, yet he looked at sea for the Norwegian's attempt.

When he watches the highlights back, Areola will surely be frustrated that he was not able to keep it out.

Vinicius Junior was Real Madrid's best player by far.

Even when they were struggling, he appeared by asking for the ball, dribbling at Real Sociedad's defenders and creating chances to score.

If there's one Real Madrid player who could leave the pitch with his head held high, it's Vinicius.
