Michael Owen has opened up on how Liverpool wanted to bring an end to Steven Gerrard's time at the club two years before his eventual exit from Anfield.
"In Steven's case, I severely doubt whether he really wanted to go and play in the States in 2015," the former Reds forward wrote in his new autobiography 'Reboot' .
"I've heard that the club wanted him out two years prior to when he actually left.
"I'm sure he would rather have wound his career down at Liverpool, playing increasingly fewer games until he reached a point where he could be integrated into the coaching staff.
"This only happened later in his case. But instead, because he'd become so symbolic and so powerful, I believe he was forced out in the short term. Steven was bigger than the club."

Liverpool wanted him out bcoz he started to get more injuries than his playing time. they were worried about his fitness. bcoz when you are at age of 30+ and start getting injuries it's so hard to gain back your speed and took long to get fit. they didn't want his legacy ended up in bad way. but Owen stop your stupidity thinking. Gerrard was heart of Liverpool fans he love the club unlike you. Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Manchester United, Manchester city, Juventus and Barcelona all this teams came to ask for Gerrard's service but Mr Gerrard never want to leave bcoz of the love he got for the team and fans. stop putting useless thinks in your book coz nobody will even read it, maybe yourself and your children and you wife, don't be surprised other member of your family not to read it.
