PSG want to sell Kylian Mbappé to solve financial problems, says report

If PSG fail to sell Mbappé, it could lead to a financial issue for the club.

If PSG do not want to lose Kylian Mbappé for free, it is down to economic reasons as well as those relating to sport and the mere fact of showing that behind the scenes “no player is above the club.” The Parisian team have officially entered a key week in their summer dealings.

This Tuesday, President Nasser Al Khelaïfi met the French player and clarified the club’s position in public, during the first training session under the orders of Luis Enrique. Mbappé's future remains uncertain to date, despite the repeated occasions in which he has stated that he wants to complete the last year of his contract and not renew until 2025.

The Mbappé affair could cause significant economic damage to the PSG coffers. As reported by The Athletic, different investors have alerted Al Khelaïfi that letting the player go free would in fact lead to a rather delicate situation, especially given the magnitude of the contract he signed in May 2022. Also, were he to leave in 2024, PSG would not earn any money from his transfer, which is what is what the PSG president wanted; this is something could expose the French club in the next financial year.

Why do PSG want to sell Kylian Mbappé?

Although PSG have successfully overcome UEFA’s economic control from last year, the reality is that Mbappé's contract continues to monopolise and drown the team’s finance pool. Last year he signed a bonus that amounted to €100 million, receiving a €70 million loyalty payment; he will earn an €80 million bonus this year on top of his salary - the best in the squad - which exceeds €70 million gross per season.

As well as the financial implications, the ambiguity surrounding the French forward’s future conditions PSG’s planning. As explained by The Athletic, “there is the threat, they claim, that players may be sold and other staff changes” as the club have a black hole of €175 million that could be filled if they finally manage to sell Kylian Mbappé. Signings such as Harry Kane or Bernardo Silva, names considered as priorities by Luis Campos, are on standby, waiting for the long-standing plot to be resolved.

When is PSG’s deadline for Mbappé?

Qatar and PSG have reportedly told Mbappé that the date of July 31, the day he will receive half of the €80 million loyalty bonus, is the deadline for his future to be resolved. This date in the calendar also coincides with the expiration of the 2025 renewal clause that the player does not want to activate.

Back on July 5, during Luis Enrique’s presentation, Al Khelaïfi gave Mbappé a ten-day order to make a final decision. The president, who has tried to persuade the player to renew, will not hesitate to put him up for sale if he does not see positive signs in the coming days for a contract extension with the French club.
