One week before the Eredivisie season kicks off, reigning champion PSV claimed the Johan Cruyff Shield with a 2-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday in Eindhoven.

Match Report

PSV came back from a goal down to beat Go Ahead Eagles and win the Johan Cruyff Schaal on Sunday. Go Ahead, who won the KNVB Cup last season, took the lead through Mathis Suray, before an own goal by Gerrit Dauber and a goal from Sergino Dest ensured that PSV picked up the trophy in the Philips stadium.

Peter Bosz chose Matej Kovar over Nick Olij; both goalkeepers joined the club in the summer of 2023. Alassane Plea and Yarek Gasiorowski also made their competitive debut for PSV.

PSV were the better side early on. A good cross from Joey Veerman gave Sergino Dest a huge chance to score, but he failed to make contact with the ball. This came after Mauro Junior and Alassane Plea also had chances to score in the first 15 minutes. Dean James came closest to breaking the deadlock early on for Go Ahead.

A fast, smooth attack from PSV resulted in Couhaib Driouch being found in the box by a low cross from Dest, but his effort was straight at Jari de Busser in the Go Ahead goal.

Go Ahead hit the woodwork in the 32nd minute. An error by Dest was almost punished by Mathis Suray, but his effort hit the crossbar. However, Suray did not have to wait long to get on the scoresheet. Three minutes later, a great pass from Joris Kramer found James on the wing, and his cross extended into the goal via the post by Suray to make it 0-1 for Go Ahead.

While many were expecting PSV to throw the kitchen sink at Go Ahead Eagles in the second half, it was a surprisingly tame performance from Peter Bosz’s side. Go Ahead were looking comfortable until PSV suddenly equalized in the 78th minute. A cross from Ivan Perisic was knocked into the Go Ahead goal by the team’s defender Gerrit Nauber.

And then the home side made it 2-1 six minutes later. Dest continued his run after playing a one-two with Perisic and took full advantage of a lucky deflection by smashing the ball into the far corner with his left foot.
