Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira has spoken about Ronaldo's departure from the Portugal national team and praised the Portuguese icon. The forward announced his decision on social media on Thursday. In the video, he said it was an honor to have been captain and that he would always support the team.
Abel Ferreira believes Ronaldo leaves the Portugal national team as the greatest figure in Portuguese sports history, having set an example of professionalism.
"For me, Ronaldo is the most important representative in Portuguese sports history and one of the most important in world sport. More than the goals, titles and records, what defines Ronaldo is the example he leaves behind. He has shown work, dedication, discipline, ambition and an extraordinary ability to surpass himself.
"He is a professional who has always been fully committed, showing us that while talent is important, what truly makes the difference is daily training, effort, strict standards and mentality. I also greatly admire his constant emphasis on family," Abel said.
Abel was called up by Scolari in 2008 to play a friendly for the Portugal national team alongside Ronaldo. He recalled that experience when the Brazilian coach visited Palmeiras.
"Ronaldo is much more than a footballer. He is Portugal's greatest ambassador to the world and a person who has inspired, and will continue to inspire, millions both inside and outside football. Ronaldo leaves behind a legacy that will last for a long time. As a Portuguese, as a coach and as someone who had the privilege of playing alongside him, I can only express my immense admiration and gratitude," Abel said.
