Paul Merson on why Alexis Sanchez's return to Man Utd would make sense and gives his view on Willian's contract situation at Chelsea.
Sanchez return makes sense
With what's currently going on, I can't see a team going out and spending £100m on a player anymore. Teams are going to have to stick with what they've got so Manchester United keeping hold of Alexis Sanchez and bringing him back into the fold would come as no surprise.
The other options would be to go and find a replacement and they would have to spend £60m or £70m to do it. I just don't think clubs are going to do that anymore, and actually, I don't think people care.
The clubs can't ask the government to pay the wages of their staff and then once this has passed, and hopefully it will, go and spend £60m, £70m and even £80m on players. That's taking the mick at the highest level!
For that reason, I can understand Sanchez coming back to play a part at Old Trafford because, on his day, he is a great player.
After this, people are going to appreciate things a lot more now - and that includes some of the footballers who get bundles of money and think they can just stroll through. Sanchez was one of those players, but I think he will probably now think this life goes very quickly, especially a football career.
Players might start to appreciate that more and he could come back, work hard and be a success because you can't go from being that good at Arsenal to be that bad at Manchester United, you just can't.
It's definitely a better United than the one he left too. They were flying before the suspension of the league. They've had some excellent performances and some brilliant results so that will benefit him too.
He's got to come back and appreciate he's at one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest. There is logic in Sanchez going back at Old Trafford, he's a top player and if they can get even half the player he was at Barcelona and Arsenal back, he'll be an asset.
What's going on with Willian?
Willian is very fortunate. Don't get me wrong, he's a brilliant player and I still think he's one of Chelsea's best players, there's no question about that whatsoever, but I think he's been fortunate in terms of getting away with the contract situation this season.
He's let his contract run down and no one has said a dicky-bird about it. We've seen so many players get plenty of stick over running down their contract and leaving on a free. Normally everybody goes mad but with Willian, because he's played so well, it's gone under the radar.
He's got no stick off the fans whatsoever and you've only got to look at the Christian Eriksen situation at Tottenham to know he's been a bit fortunate with that.
But Willian is world class, and Chelsea haven't got a lot of world-class players. Willian has been outstanding, he could play for Manchester City tomorrow. There will be teams queuing around the block to sign him. He's a special player and for me, Chelsea have dropped one by letting it get to this situation.
He wants a three-year deal, but I think he hasn't got much chance of that now. I don't see clubs giving out contracts like that anymore. One minute we are sitting here, and everything is rosy, the next minute it is all up in the air.
Clubs are giving players £300,000-a-week but no one is doing anything at the moment - there is no way clubs are going to be doing that anymore.
Willian is a great player and in the next two years he'll be a great player, but in the third year, he won't. Who's ripping up the Premier League at 34? No one. So I just don't see how Willian gets a three-year deal now, unless he already has a deal agreed.
Let's not kid ourselves, when this sort of situation crops up usually a player has already agreed a deal with another club. It's already done and dusted. Willian is not sitting and waiting until the end of the season on the chance he's going to fill his boots. That's normally all sorted in January.
It's very rare someone sees their contract out and then goes from there because you can't take that chance. I'd be shocked if he hasn't already agreed a deal to join another club because it's very rare to not get your situation sorted.
You are allowed to talk to other clubs from January, so I just don't see why you'd wait. Why would you take that chance? Football is such a short career and there was no one who'd take that chance of a loss of form or a bad injury.
I'd be so surprised if he hasn't sorted out his next club and his next contract but if he hasn't, he's stuck because I don't think he'll get a three-year deal now.

You might be kidding bro, you saying you rate Willian in the same books of Drogba. 🤷🏽♂️
I'm saying his importance at this stage is on the same level,

I'm no Chelsea fan but i rate Willian in the same books as Drogba interms of impact and importance to Chelsea, I carry loads of respect (and dislike as a rival fan) for him and I think Chelsea fans wont have anything against him if he leaves, he has given blood and sweat for the blues
you are right

Mou never negotiated any contract. He only agreed like most fans that theplayer joins. Matt judge is the chief negotiator at utd.
They got him because Mourinho asked for him to block his move to City and they had to give unnecessary wages plus bonuses for playing to make him come. This is the reason why Rashford, Martial, De Gea pushed for the wages they now receive... it was a very bad deal. Even if he had performed well, it was still bad because it has spoiled the wage structure in the team.

The deal for Sanchez wages is one of the mistakes of Mourinho in United and it's still haunting the team... United better handle this carefully to avoid disrupting the harmony that the team has now.

there is no need for him coming back to Manchester united, and Sanchez can never motivate the team any more like the way Bruno has done

I thought Chelsea had some really good agents in Mata and Matić but it looks like Arsenal got the best one in Alexis Sánchez 😁

The Chinese Super League is the perfect place for him
Could be.Yeah I agree with you they can manage his wages too..but a lot depends upon Sanchez's priority as well..If he's to play in Europe he would have to take a significant pay cut.

What makes sense? I hope Paul Merson has a club so he can help us receive Sanchez.

Sanchez's return to Man utd will act as Lingard's replacement. He can be in our 2nd Eleven.

His salary is way too high to let him stay at the club

All that makes sense right now is finding a Club for Alexis Sanchez and his £400,000K wage packet and use that to bring in Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish because if Sancho does arrive there's no place for him in the XI as there's already the likes of Rashford,James and Martial and United surely won't want him to earn this much money simply by sitting on the bench and doing nothing..Better Sell him,Jones,Rojo,Pereira,Smalling and probably Lingard too coz I may be a laughing stock now for saying this but I feel for Jesse Lingard as he's one of our own and the way his career has gone on a downward spiral just like Theo Walcott's at Arsenal.I do hope he could prove himself too Ole and fight for his place at Old Trafford but we don't know what's gonna happen at the moment him staying at Utd seems unlikely.

the problem with sanchez is his wage of 500k per week. no team in the world will accept to pay this guy this amount of money. he still has 2 years left on his contract . so he will continue to get 500k per week either he is injured, warming the bench or playing for the next 2 years. this is the reality. i will advise man utd to give away sanchez for free to a chinese club which can afford to pay sanchez the 500k weekly wage.[Crylaugh][Crylaugh][Crylaugh]
