Paul Scholes and Glenn Hoddle have tipped Ralph Hasenhuttl to be the next Manchester United manager.
Hasenhuttl's Southampton side held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford this afternoon and caused them plenty of problems with their energetic pressing style.
Before the game, BT Sport aired a segment detailing the working relationship between Hasenhuttl and current United boss Ralf Rangnick when they were at RB Leipzig together.
Rangnick was previously director of football at the German side and hired Hasenhuttl as manager in 2016.
When his spell in the dugout comes to an end this summer, Rangnick will take on a two-year consultancy role at Old Trafford – leading Scholes and Hoddle to suggest that a reunion with Hasenhuttl could be on the cards.
'We were talking about, I said 'well would that not be a good fit?', Hoddle said.
'No (it's not being talked about). That was the strange thing for me, if they worked so close together and he (Rangnick) is going to be the sporting director eventually… that works.
'I mean, Southampton will want to keep him, of course they would, because he's doing a very good job with the players he's got there. He's doing an excellent job, but if he wanted it (the Manchester United job), it would make sense.'
Agreeing with his colleague, Scholes said: 'It's not really something that's crossed my mind until the last 10/15 minutes when Glenn mentioned it. And watching that interview, there is a closeness between them.
'As a sporting director it looks like he was the right choice at the right time for Leipzig, he did brilliantly.
'And I've always liked him (Hasenhuttl). I've always thought the football he plays at Southampton with not the best squad, I don't want to be disrespectful, but the type of football he's played has worked for them and his teams have been good to watch, I think he comes across really well.
'This (Manchester United) would be a different kind of pressure. I think people around this club and fans especially are thinking more of possibly (Mauricio) Pochettino or an Antonio Conte and people that have been at bigger clubs I suppose.
'But the more I think about it, I don't think it would be a bad thing. The way he goes about his business looks good.
'Maybe (he is the answer). He hasn't really worked with the big players I suppose at a club where he will be expected to win things. But do you know what, maybe the outlook of expecting to win things straight away has changed a little bit.
'It might be a chance for a reset or a rebuild. Clearly, new younger players are needed and we are a long way behind Liverpool and Manchester City especially.
'So it could be a good chance to come and build and put his stamp on things, and I think Ralf Rangnick is trying to play that way that Southampton are, trying to play with that high-press, and I think he would be a good fit with a fresh, young new squad.'
It was only this week that Hasenhuttl caused surprise when he revealed to German outlet Kicker that he was considering retiring when his current Southampton contract expires in 2024.
However, the Saints' recent performances show that the Austrian still has plenty to give on the touchline.
Southampton ended Manchester City's 12-game winning run when they drew 1-1 with Pep Guardiola's side last month, while they twice came from behind to win 3-2 away at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
Current PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino remains the favourite to be Manchester United's next manager, while Ajax's Erik ten Hag has also been hotly tipped.
