Newcastle face a battle to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City with Bayern Munich also ready to move for the midfielder.
The Toon wants to sign the England star in January as £55million summer buy Sandro Tonali faces a ban after admitting betting offences while at AC Milan.
City outcast Phillips, 27, will consider a January move to boost his hopes of playing at the Euros next summer.
Boss Pep Guardiola is likely to let him leave on loan in January but will wait to see whether Newcastle are title rivals before making a decision when the transfer window opens, according to the Sun.
German giants Bayern Munich have also shown interest in Phillips, who was told he could leave in the summer but instead decided to fight for his spot at the Treble winners.
However, the former Leeds midfielder has only started once for Man City in all competitions this season,
And he admitted he was desperate for game time to book his place in the squad for next summer's European Championship in Germany.
Phillips admitted he was suffering from a lack of match sharpness and was lucky not be sent off during England's sensational 3-1 win over Italy on Tuesday.
Phillips picked up a clumsy yellow card in the ninth minute and was lucky to remain on the pitch after not being shown second booking for a late tackle at the end of the first half.
'I knew it was going to be a yellow card,' the midfielder admitted. 'I stuck my leg out and was quite fortunate in the end not to get sent off. Is what it is. It's football and the type of player I am.
'As a footballer you always want to be playing and I haven't done that over last year and half. One thing I want to do is to come in for England and start. I was fine against Scotland and try to make sure I am ready for whatever comes.
'Gareth played me today and I'm just happy to put the white shirt on again. That's one thing I want is minutes and I want to go to the Euros.'

Pep is in heaven on earth. No one questions him at city. Other coaches are questioned to prove why they bought a particular player n no fund be given stating clearly he should develop the player . pep bought Nolito in January amd sold him in summer no question. bought Danilo in sumer n sold him the next summer no question. sold Joe hart and bought brava only to latter use 3rd choice calabero instead of bravo, sold brava latter n bought ederson no question upon all these. He is given time to conduct experiments nomatter the money he spends. No doubt bayern couldn't keep him
he has paid the club with the numerous trophies City has won in his tenure. NOT EASY TO WIN A TREBLE. Remember
