Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder long sidelined by Manchester City, hopes to overcome his injury problems and revive his career this season. His loan spell last year was disappointing: he made just 3 appearances for Sheffield United in the Championship.
This marks the continuation of Phillips's sharp decline. Since joining Manchester City for £45 million in 2022, he has struggled to establish himself at any club. Whether on loan at West Ham United, Ipswich Town, or Sheffield United, he has failed to rediscover the form needed at age 29, and extended absences due to injury have compounded his troubles.
Although his contract with Manchester City runs until 2028, the club has long written him out of their plans and will seek his departure again this summer. Manchester City prefers a permanent transfer, but the club and Phillips have only been able to arrange loans previously.
The former Leeds United star is eager for a fresh start and a return to regular playing time, hoping to end his recent struggles—unlike his last loan spell at Sheffield United. He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "That experience was just 'meh.' I made only two or three appearances, then got injured and missed the rest of the season."
"Not playing regularly for the past three years has been my main issue, and it's also contributed to my ongoing injuries. So I'm really looking forward to a smooth new season."
Beyond finding Phillips a new club, Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana faces pressure to overhaul the midfield this summer. Over the past five years, Manchester City have signed Phillips, Nunes, Nicolás González, and Reijnders, yet none of the four have secured a regular starting role in midfield.
Elliott Anderson will join Manchester City this summer for a club-record £116 million, and further reinforcements may still be needed. As Viana assesses targets, Manchester City are interested in Tonali and young Moroccan prospect Ayoub Bouaddi.
