Porro, at 26, has become a World Cup champion, but behind his success lies a challenging journey of struggle.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Porro, in an interview with "ABC", recalled his family's difficulties during his childhood. He stated: "My childhood was not easy; my family's financial situation was very bad, and we suffered a lot economically."
Due to his parents' busy work schedules, Porro's grandparents played a crucial role in his upbringing. Porro explained: "My mother worked at Mercadona, and my father took on whatever jobs he could, so my grandparents had to look after me."
He recalled being sent to his grandparents' house when his mother left for work in the early morning: "When my mother left for work at 3, 4, or 5 in the morning, she would take me to my grandparents' house." He admitted that he couldn't understand this arrangement as a child: "I always cried back then, crying because I didn't want to go to my grandparents' house, and my mother actually understood how I felt."
As he grew older, Porro increasingly realized the sacrifices his family made for him to achieve his dreams, especially his grandfather. When his parents couldn't make it, his grandfather would always accompany him to training and matches: "I am very, very lucky; my grandfather, bless him, always took me to play football, to fulfill my dreams."
One of his most unforgettable memories is of his family going to extra lengths to be with him: "We were playing in Alcorcón at the time, and kick-off was at 10 AM, I think. There was no other way. I will never forget that. After the match, we won, and I spoke with my family, and they told me they had arrived five hours earlier and slept in the car that night."
When Porro left home for Madrid to join Rayo Vallecano's youth academy, he had to adapt to a new life, balancing football and studies away from his family: "To achieve your dreams, you have to make sacrifices. I didn't really like studying because my head was always full of football; I was completely obsessed with it."
Today, the 26-year-old Porro still remembers those who supported him from the beginning. He deeply understands that his success is inseparable from his family's dedication, especially his grandfather: "I try to repay all of my grandfather's efforts from back then in the best possible way."
