In the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, Portugal will face Spain. Portugal has only managed one victory against Spain in their last 12 official matches.
In their previous five major international tournament encounters, Portugal and Spain have always been evenly matched, with each team securing one win and three matches ending in draws.
This includes their most recent FIFA World Cup meeting in 2018, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw featuring a spectacular hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo; and their most recent knockout stage encounter in the 2012 European Championship semi-finals, where the teams played to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, with Spain ultimately advancing after a penalty shootout.
However, Portugal has only one win, six draws, and five losses in their last 12 official matches against Spain (penalty shootouts are counted as draws). That sole victory dates back more than 20 years to the group stage of Euro 2004, when Portugal won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nuno Gomes.
Nevertheless, Portugal can draw confidence from their most recent encounter. In the UEFA Nations League final in June 2025, Portugal ultimately defeated Spain, albeit via a penalty shootout.
