On November 5, after Ronaldo officially announced the end of his Portugal national team career, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro paid tribute to the Portuguese football legend in a social media post.
Montenegro wrote: "Thank you! Everything you have done for Portugal on the field will live on forever. And now, even off the field, you will continue to represent Portugal to the world."
Montenegro tagged Ronaldo in the post and added a Portuguese flag emoji.
As one of the most iconic figures in the history of the Portugal national team, Ronaldo has shown Portuguese football's influence on the international stage throughout his career and has become one of the country's national symbols. Montenegro has also publicly expressed his admiration for Ronaldo on several previous occasions. In June 2025, after Portugal won the UEFA Nations League, Montenegro went into the locker room to celebrate with the team and took a photo with Ronaldo.
