Pundits have criticised VAR after Denmark suffered huge frustration in their Euro 2024 defeat to Denmark.

Fans also claimed that Denmark had 'been robbed', with defender Joachim Andersen suffering a double VAR nightmare.

Andersen thought he had put Denmark in front but his goal was ruled out for offside, with referee Michael Oliver receiving much criticism.

Shortly afterwards, there was further agony for Andersen as he conceded a penalty for an alleged handball.

Kai Havertz stepped up to take the penalty and managed to find the net.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou bemoaned the fact that Oliver wasn't making the decision to award the penalty as he criticised VAR.

Speaking on ITV, Postecoglou said: 'That's the issue, Michael Oliver is not making that decision and that's been my issue all along.

'He saw the action and deemed that it wasn't necessary to be a penalty.

'That's my problem. If I hear one more person saying that VAR is not re-refereeing the game, I will blow up!

'Seriously, because that is what they do. I don't think that is why we bought in technology for that decision. That decision, for me, is quite an easy one. If that wasn't paid we wouldn't be talking about it tomorrow. This is not on Michael Oliver. We're not criticising the referee here, we're criticising the technology. Which is what I criticise consistently.

'I fully back the referee in this instance. If he didn't pay it, or if he did pay it, we'd be saying OK, he saw it that way, but technology is supposed to be definitive.'

Ian Wright also criticised the decision to give a handball against Andersen.

Wright said: 'For me for them to be looking at that as a handball, that's never going to sit well with me. I don't know why they're going to the science of that, lawfully it's going crazy.'

Alan Shearer wrote: 'The hand ball law is s***'.

Ben Foster stated: 'Games gone'.

In addition, Dietmar Hamann criticised VAR. He wrote: 'Never believed VAR was going to work. Took the good with the bad but tonight is the first time I seriously worry about our beautiful game.'

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott called for VAR to be scrapped. He wrote: 'VAR has killed the love of football! Start again……'.

One user wrote on X that it was a 'heartbreaking couple of minutes for Joachim Andersen.'

Another user claimed that Denmark had been robbed.

They wrote: 'Denmark have been robbed.

'Can anybody give me a reason that it was a penalty?

'What is wrong with these dumb referees? They are ruining the beautiful game of football. Pathetic!

Former Norwegian player Jan Age Fjortoft stated that the penalty shouldn't have been given against Andersen.

Fjortoft wrote: 'The handball - rule is so not good! There is no way Andersen did that on purpose !!!!'.

Another user added: 'Andersen’s last five minutes has perfectly encapsulated life as a Crystal Palace fan.'

In addition, one user stated that Andersen had been 'so unlucky'. They wrote: 'From scoring a goal to giving away a penalty. That is so unlucky Joachim Andersen.'

Another user stated that the situation involving Andersen was 'brutal'. They wrote: 'Andersen getting a goal ruled off by VAR and then VAR giving Germany a penalty after it hit his arm is BRUTAL.'
