CHAOS erupted at Old Trafford as Sunderland were denied a penalty on the brink of half-time.
Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot after consulting the linesman following Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko's high boot towards Trai Hulme after a long throw was launched into the box.
The referee didn't spot it before walking towards the linesman who duly told him it was penalty.
Bruno Fernandes and Co were incensed after replays showed Sesko had made no contact with Hulme at all.
From his chair in Stockley Park VAR official Neil Davies advised Attwell to take a second look at the monitor.
A long wait saw the man in charge call Fernandes and Sunderland skipper Granit Xhaka over.
The crowd knew his decision before he announced it on the mic as Fernandes ushered his side to prepare for a Sunderland corner.
The resulting corner found Daniel Ballard, who was subbed on for Simon Adingra in the 37th minute, who headed just wide before the half-time whistle.
The PGMOL have since released an explanation on X.
It read: "After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of penalty to Sunderland.
"Referee announcement: “After review, there is no foul by the Manchester United player. He does not make contact with the head of the attacker.
"As the ball is out of play when the decision was made, the final decision is corner kick.”
United were leading 2-0 by the break after Mason Mount's classy opener was followed up by Sesko's poacher's finish from close range.
