RMC: Ronaldo wedding rumors were for an ordinary couple; The Sun's report was wrong

According to RMC, Funchal, Madeira, was flooded with people last Saturday due to rumors of Ronaldo's wedding, but the supposed wedding was actually a ceremony for an ordinary couple.

What was billed as the "wedding of the century" turned out to be the wedding of a couple almost nobody knew. Last Saturday, Funchal, the capital of Portugal's Madeira Islands, was unusually lively, with hundreds of people flocking to the streets to witness what The Sun had claimed was the wedding of Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez.

The British tabloid had also reported earlier that week that the ceremony would take place on August 8 at Funchal Cathedral, followed by celebrations at the Savoy Palace Five Hotel. The hotel would have two floors booked, featuring four restaurants. These claims led many Ronaldo fans to believe them, and they waited all day outside both locations mentioned in the report.

"We felt like celebrities"

Dutch media outlet HLN reported that whenever a vintage car approached, onlookers would shout, "It's him! It's him!" Others, seeing a football team approaching the hotel, excitedly said, "Those must be Ronaldo's friends!" However, everyone was quickly disappointed.

It was not Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez who appeared at the entrance of Funchal Cathedral, but Fabio Santos-Ramos and Fátima Nicole-Cunha-Teixeira, a local couple now living in France. Hours later, the cathedral's official account responded, saying: "There were many journalists and tourists on the street, and the scene was very chaotic for a while, but we finally managed to close the church and complete the ceremony."

This mix-up will likely leave an unforgettable memory for the newlyweds. A guest told the Diário de Notícias da Madeira, laughing, "We felt like celebrities." He also added, "I was shocked that anyone would think Ronaldo was getting married today—and without security, no less."

After meeting Georgina in 2016 and proposing to her a year later, Ronaldo couldn't help but laugh at the farce. He replied with a crying-with-laughter emoji to a post from the Diário de Notícias da Madeira. Ronaldo's sister, Elma Aveiro, was less amused, saying, "But why would these people think Ronaldo was getting married today, unless he had announced it himself? Honestly."

However, Ronaldo himself had previously said that his wedding would not be a grand affair but would be very private, as his fiancée wished. Therefore, the outside world has continued to speculate that the wedding would be held quietly, without an official announcement. Some on Madeira still believe the wedding will take place this summer, or even in the coming days.

HLN also reported that 25 taxis with dark tinted windows had indeed been reserved for last Saturday. Someone revealed, "It will be postponed until next week." Another said, "You'll have to come back again." This suggests that downtown Funchal might be filled with crowds again next weekend. By then, who knows—perhaps another ordinary couple will be waiting to be blessed.
