The match Real Madrid played at Anfield last season made it clear the team wasn’t ready to compete in Europe, a fact Arsenal would later confirm months down the line. A year later, the test in the same stadium, against a Liverpool side under scrutiny after recent losses, leaves the impression that this Real Madrid hasn’t evolved enough, especially when it comes to its players’ attitude both with and without the ball. The style has changed, but the effectiveness has not.
The numbers show two games that differ in some areas, yet share one key similarity when it comes to attacking the opponent’s goal. A year ago, Liverpool took 16 shots; this time, 17 — but with sharper accuracy, as nine were on target, underlining Courtois’s value. Last year, the Belgian conceded twice but made five saves that prevented a rout.
In attack, Madrid replicated last season’s output: seven shots, two on target, though this time without a missed penalty in the mix. The impotence inside the box in Madrid’s last two visits to Anfield contrasts sharply with earlier ones, like the night in 2023 when Benzema led the team to a five-goal performance.
One statistic makes it clear that football is decided in the boxes: possession. Madrid dominated the ball, jumping from 38 percent last season to a sterile 61 this year. They increased their passes from 338 to 482 — yet produced almost no penetration. Liverpool, meanwhile, dropped from 585 to 310 passes but created more chances and looked far more likely to win comfortably.
The players themselves, led by Valverde, spoke afterward about attitude with and without the ball, and rightly so. The reality, though, is that Real Madrid’s style doesn’t suit endlessly circulating possession. Without movement up front, having the ball means little, and that’s something Xabi Alonso still hasn’t managed to instill in his players. A step backward, at least in Europe.

It’s a big embarrassment for the Spanish league.. almost all the major teams have been humiliated by English Premier League clubs, except for Barcelona. What is the Spanish football director doing about this? Football seems to be leaving the Spanish league.
Except Barca ? Tell me one big English team you have faced recently ?😂 Clown fanbase 🤡😂

When your coach decides to copy Barcelona possession style of football but depends on only one player to score. They were only better against laliga small teams.

Liverpool's goal was from a deadball play. Can't draw many conclusions from that except they had more shots on goal, but none that went in.

Alonso’s Real Madrid good at keeping possession but bad in the final third. We outplayed Liverpool but had nothing to show for it. We really need a striker like Kane or Haaland. Our wingers too are really bad. Vinicius and Rodrygo needs to improve if not, we won’t win anything again this season
this clown didn't watch the match 😂 he is checking possession 😂, passing the ball with your goalie is not possession it called waste of time 😂 even Manchester United would have outplayed Madrid yesterday with that nonsense they are playing 😂 it could have easily been 6:0

Liverpool sat in their defence through out the game. Alonso still has to work on this low block of a thing . Teams that sit in their defence and only wait for counter football. There will be lot of teams that going to do this season. Alonso has to find solution to that.
clown Madrid is the team known for shamelessly sitting low blocks against big teams despite spending more every season, Liverpool dominated them through out the match ,madrid was just delaying Liverpool fury by passing the ball around at their own half with the goal keeper that's not keeping possession it called time wasting

Go and look at the possession then come back. Outplayed has to do with possession not shot on target. Learn more about football
You are the one who should learn more about football. Out playing a team doesn't necessarily mean just about possession. you put into consideration all the statistics that comes with playing football the only part of the statistics where Real Madrid did better than Liverpool was in possession as for every other part Liverpool out played Madrid by mil. progressive passes number of shots, shots and targets etc. Madrid were totally out played by Liverpool. You guys should even thank Courtois, as he's the only reason why this game didn't end as a massacre.

LoL Liverpool didn't sit in their defence like Madrid does against big teams. 😂 They Pressed Madrid very well. They had ° More Shots ° More Shots on Target ° More Passes Overall ° More Progressive Passes ( This shows they weren't just passing the ball in their own half) ° More Passes in the Final third ° More Chances Created Liverpool were the better side by a mile. That game could go on for 24hrs and Madrid still won't score 😂

Real Madrid need a pure no 9. The likes of Isaq, Kane etc fill in well. Madrid needs to offload Vini so that Kylian takes his favoured position.

No, it is you who is mistaken. Possession along your back line is not effective possession. It is keeping the ball in sterile areas. Madrid are blunt going past the half way line. Madrid were clearly outplayed in every department including tactics. If you can't see that then time to choose another sport. Possession and effective possession are 2 different things. Goal threat is the key indicator to highlight dominance. Courtois made this look better than it was for Madrid.

the mistake is choach has to make vinicius free. let him go wherever he wants in the attacking position. with him only being in left side will be effect less on attack. Alonso has to give more freedom like mbappe

Alonso is not good enough for real Madrid bcos u don't know how to handle big team with the calibre of players at ur disposal, sorry nothing for real Madrid d way we played against big teams. we can't win champions league.

Real Madrid would be attacking without a player in the opponent’s box, so how do you expect to win against big teams. We look good against smaller teams but would be difficult always against stronger opponents. We saw it against PSG, Atico and now Liverpool. Another thing is, Madrid always poor at defending set pieces. We concede from almost every set piece or rather commit worse fouls in the process.

Let Madrid get a conventional striker. Father Perez and baby coach Alonso should take decisive and urgent action. Let Haaland come in. Reinforce the midfield with the inclusion of Vitinha. Hala Madrid.

But your players are shining in La Liga meaning that they are not yet ready for tougher opponents. And another thing, it seems like Madrid could be the most favoured team in Spain
