There is good news for Real Madrid ahead of their Champions League last-16 first leg away at Paris Saint-Germain this Tuesday night, as Ferland Mendy is expected to start at the Parc des Princes.
Marcelo came in for the injured Frenchman for Real Madrid's 0-0 draw at Villarreal last weekend, but he had a tough time up against Samu Chukwueze.
The Brazilian's defensive shortcomings were there to see as he lost the ball six times and was dribbled past four times, which was more than anyone else. Marcelo won just 20 percent of his duels, too.
Mendy over his hamstring issue
If Real Madrid were unsure of Mendy's importance before the Villarreal game, then they were soon reminded as he brings a lot more solidity at the back than Marcelo.
It is likely that Carlo Ancelotti will give Mendy the nod for Los Blancos' Champions League tie in Paris, despite having missed three weeks of football due to adductor troubles.
Mendy suffered his most recent injury against Elche on January 23, but he will be keen to return to the XI for such an important game.
The French left-back has won 63 of 91 games that he has played for Real Madrid, a win percentage of 69.23 percent. Of the remaining games, Mendy has drawn 17 and lost just 11 times.
If not Mendy or Marcelo, then who?
When looking at who is left to call upon at left-back, there is not an abundance of choices after Mendy and Marcelo.
Moving David Alaba to left-back would mean separating him from Eder Militao, the best defensive pairing that Real Madrid have had so season so far.
This would open the door to utility man Nacho Fernandez, who could cover as full-back if needed. Youngster Miguel Gutierrez unfortunately looks too far off the pace at present to assist the first team.

you are confirming my opinion if Alaba go forward and Mendy stay in defence covering that means Alaba is better than Mendy in going forward. since Mendy arrived at real Madrid he never delivered more than 2 assists in a season
You are correct but that is not his primary duty. Eg. PSG scored tonight from the other side of our defense. That explains it all.

It's not true. If you are a Real Madrid fan u will notice Alaba moves forward and Mendy covers for him at centre back. We score more when Mendy is around. Directly or indirectly. Hala Madrid.
