Carlo Ancelotti's appointment may have come as a shock after Zinedine Zidane's second departure as coach, yet the Italian has taken charge of a team that merely needed guidance, and after a brilliant LaLiga Santander season, Real Madrid are officially the champions of Spain once more.
A 4-0 victory over Espanyol on Saturday afternoon was enough to mathematically confirm Los Merengues' status as champions, wrestling the title back from their cross-city rivals, Atletico Madrid.
With a Champions League semi-final second-leg to follow, Real Madrid now have the chance to bring a perfect end to the season, something which very few thought possible when Ancelotti was appointed.
Rodrygo Goes netted a brace before half-time which all but secured the title for Los Blancos, as the Brazilian continued the fine form which has marked the second-half of his own campaign.
His first goal was an example of composure as he received the ball inside the penalty area and he placed his shot into the bottom corner, whilst his second was a poacher's effort which capitalised on a disastrous Espanyol error in defence.
After 56 minutes it was 3-0 as Marco Asensio fired a shot into the net via the left post, although the highlight from this goal was the creativity and effort of Eduardo Camavinga to create the chance.
In the 72nd minute it seemed as though there was a rare Isco goal as the veteran showed a fine amount of composure inside the penalty area as he scored with a first-time shot.
However, VAR would rule the goal out for offside, leaving Karim Benzema to complete the rout in the 81st minute of play as he fired a first-time shot of his own into the bottom left corner of the net, courtesy of a Vinicius Jr pass.
