Real Madrid remains the LaLiga club with the highest spending capacity for player salaries. The Spanish giants now have a salary cap of $895 million compared with $413 million set for Barcelona by the league’s governing body. Across LaLiga, the total maximum spending on salaries is $3.18 billion.
As is customary after each transfer window, LaLiga updates the amount each club can allocate to player and staff salaries, including players, coaching staff, reserves, and basketball teams, as well as transfer fees. Real Madrid continues to hold the top spot, increasing its cap from $888 million last season to $896 million this year.
Atlético Madrid closes in on cost-cutting Barcelona
Barcelona, by contrast, suffers another significant cut. In February, the club had a ceiling of $544 million, meaning their summer reduction amounts to $131 million.
Atlético Madrid remains the third-highest spender in LaLiga, with a salary and transfer cap of $384 million. This is up from $369 million in February, bringing them closer to overtaking Barcelona in spending power.
How LaLiga calculates the salary cap
The Salary Cost Limit sets the maximum a club can spend on its registered sports staff, including players, head coach, assistant coaches, and physical trainers, as well as unregistered squads like the youth academy and other club sections.
Registered staff salaries include fixed and variable payments, whether in cash or perks such as housing, cars, or travel. They also cover image rights, amortization of transfers, social security contributions, contract termination fees, collective bonuses, and agent commissions. The calculation is based on the difference between a club’s income, including TV rights, commercial revenue, and ticket sales, and its structural costs plus projected debt repayment over the season.
What happens if a LaLiga team exceeds its cap?
Each club proposes its own limit, which can be set below its maximum, but must comply with LaLiga’s Economic Control rules and receive approval from the Validation Body.
If a club’s limit threatens its financial stability, the governing body will reduce it. Teams that exceed their cap by season’s end face restrictions on registering or renewing players until the situation is corrected.
