According to the Daily Mail, during a friendly match between French team Metz and Dutch team Fortuna Sittard, the female referee officiating the match was knocked to the ground and allegedly suffered a concussion.
The 26-year-old female referee, Mathilde de Monvert, was officiating a friendly match between French second-division team Metz and Dutch team Fortuna Sittard, which took place on Sunday.
In the 39th minute, a Metz player pulled the jersey of an opposing player who was breaking through, and de Monvert awarded Fortuna Sittard a free kick.
Subsequently, the Fortuna Sittard player who had just been fouled clashed with two Metz players.
De Monvert immediately rushed forward to try and defuse the conflict, and players from both sides also ran over, quickly escalating the situation.
Footage shows that as more players surged into the conflict, the 26-year-old de Monvert was knocked backward and fell to the ground.
Although the footage is not very clear, de Monvert's head appears to have hit the ground after she fell.
A Fortuna Sittard player quickly noticed the referee's condition, stood beside her, and signaled for medical staff to come forward.
Medical staff, assistant referees, and security personnel then entered the field, and de Monvert received assistance.
Footage shows that de Monvert had already sat up when medical staff began examining her, and the players also appeared concerned by the scene.
De Monvert was ultimately unable to continue officiating the match, and one of her assistant referees was forced to take over.
When this conflict occurred, the backdrop read "Respect the Referee," and ultimately, two players received yellow cards.
Fortuna Sittard referred to it as "an unusual moment" on their club's official website.
Metz, who were leading 1-0 at the time, eventually won the friendly match 3-1.
