Reporters have their say on who the best goalkeeper in the world

David de Gea once again thrived on centre stage when his heroics repelled Tottenham's attacks and handed Manchester United a vital 1-0 victory at Wembley on Sunday.

De Gea has proven integral to United during some trying times lately but between the sticks, how does he compare to the rest of the world's goalkeepers?

Sportsmail's experts have their say.

IAN HERBET

1) David de Gea 2) Jan Oblak 3) Marc Andre Ter Stegen

De Gea is the complete keeper, who has risen to the realms of superstar in the most demanding league in the world.

Not the world’s greatest defensive organiser but just one who quietly gets on with his craft, despite having been denied the dream move to Real Madrid that he always coveted.

CHRIS WHEELER

1) David de Gea 2) Manuel Neuer 3) Jan Oblak

De Gea proved himself during the good times at Manchester United long ago, but his performances in the lean years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement – player of the year in four of the past five seasons – has demonstrated just how good he is.

The Spaniard gets the vote ahead of Bayern Munich’s sweeper keeper Neuer, whose injury problems have affected his form over the past year, with Oblak edging out a number of other contenders based on his consistency for Atletico Madrid.

CRAIG HOPE

1) David de Gea 2) Manuel Neuer 3) Thibaut Courtois

There is something infinitely likeable about De Gea's style of goalkeeping, and it's not just that he's the best. There is a carefree charisma to his saves, almost as if he's saying, 'Don't worry fellas, I've got this'.

JOE BERNSTEIN

1) Jan Oblak 2) Ederson 3) Marc Andre Ter Stegen

I'm in a minority who wouldn't put David de Gea in the top three. He's got phenomenal reflexes, the best in the world, but doesn't command his penalty area as well as the others and isn't the bravest coming from goal.

Jan Oblak has kept 46 clean sheets in his last 86 Liga games for Atletico Madrid and is still only 26. Ederson has shown courage and personality at Manchester City despite the defensive personnel rotating in front of him. Marc Andre Ter Stegen is the natural heir to Manuel Neuer as the identikit sweeper-keeper. Thibaut Courtois and Neuer would be on the list but for injuries.

To save being accused of an agenda, I’m going to pick the three best outside the Premier League. It’s impossible to split David De Gea, Alisson Becker and Ederson - they are all match defines who have improved their teams immeasurably- so I’m going to offer up three alternatives.

They are headed by Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid’s outstanding No 1.

LAURIE WHITWELL

1) David de Gea 2) Alisson 3) Jan Oblak

In real time, the volley that Toby Alderweireld swept towards Manchester United’s near post looked like it just hit De Gea. But look closer and you see De Gea’s anticipation. He senses danger, gets in position early, and shapes his body in the most effective manner to block space.

It is saves like these, made over and over again, that lift De Gea to world’s best. He is resolute on the basics – holding Harry Kane’s free–kick rather than punching to spread calm – and creative when things get more difficult.

Alisson has improved Liverpool immensely, his distribution worth as much as his composure, even accounting for the occasional misstep, while Atletico Madrid’s Oblak had the highest save ratio of all goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues last season, at more than 85 per cent.

ADAM CRAFTON

1) David de Gea 2) Alisson 3) Ederson

In club football, De Gea is out on his own and has been for years now. He is a Ferguson signing that, for value, foresight and quality, now compares with the captures of Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Peter Schmeichel.

When he arrived at Old Trafford, he actually handed his goalkeeping coach Eric Steele a series of his own feet-based drills. We saw the fruit of that work on Sunday. Most players want to swap shirts after games. I now wonder if his rivals will start asking for De Gea’s boots.
