According to Reuters, Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães for around €80 million, but renewed interest from Real Madrid could complicate the deal.
Newcastle's Champions League exit by Barcelona has paved the way for the possible departure of the Brazilian midfielder. Manchester United see the 28-year-old as a replacement for Casemiro, who has confirmed his departure at the end of the season.
Sources say Casemiro himself has recommended Guimarães to the club, considering him his ideal successor and valuing his experience and leadership.
Initial contacts showed mutual interest, which could have allowed negotiations to proceed smoothly. However, Real Madrid's sudden intervention significantly altered the situation.
Real Madrid had been monitoring Guimarães since the Ancelotti era. It is understood that the Italian manager recommended him three years ago as a midfield successor to Modric and Kroos, at which time the player was very close to joining Real Madrid. This transfer, originally planned for the summer of 2022, ultimately fell through because Newcastle made a nearly €50 million offer to Lyon in January 2022, directly disrupting Real Madrid's plans.
Real Madrid now needs to find a dominant midfielder for next season and is closely monitoring Guimarães again.
Carlo Ancelotti, currently coaching the Brazilian national team at Guimarães, has once again voiced his support for the transfer, trusting president Florentino Pérez and stating that the midfielder is exactly the player Real Madrid needs at this stage.
With the next transfer window approaching, Guimarães is likely to become the focus of a transfer battle.
