Kobbie Mainoo wants to leave Manchester United before the transfer window slams shut, but Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand hopes the midfielder will stay at Old Trafford
Rio Ferdinand has urged Kobbie Mainoo to stay at Manchester United after it emerged that the midfielder has told the club he wants to leave. Mirror Football understands that Napoli are ready to sign Mainoo and he is keen on the move.
However, United are mindful of the success Scott McTominay has had after joining Napoli last summer, with the Scotland international helping them win Serie A while earning himself a Ballon d'Or nomination.
Mainoo believes a move to Napoli could have the same effect on his career, but United have so far blocked his exit. And Ferdinand wants Mainoo to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.
In response to the news, Ferdinand said: "I don't want to hear that. So Kobbie, if you're watching, please don't let me hear that, please man, I need you to stay at the club. Be patient please, I know it's difficult. It's easy for me to say, but I want to see you here.
"You couldn't have bet me any money that after his exploits with England that we'd be sitting here going, 'Kobbie Mainoo can't get in the Man United team, they're thinking about selling him and he wants to go'."
Mainoo has been an unused substitute in United's opening Premier League games, with manager Ruben Amorim stating that the 20-year-old is competing with club captain Bruno Fernandes for a spot in the team.
"Mainoo is fighting for his position with Bruno," Amorim said after United's 1-1 draw with Fulham. "I changed two midfielders, I left Mason Mount there because we wanted to score a goal and when I changed, I felt the team needed one holding midfielder. So he needs to fight for his position with Bruno. At the moment he is fighting in training with Bruno for the position."
Mainoo did make his first start of the season in United's humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby on Wednesday, but struggled to make much of an impact. And if he does end up staying at United, Ferdinand has urged Mainoo to make sure that he is ready to make the most of any opportunities he gets.
"We've all had these moments in our careers where you're like, 'S*** man, I'm not playing. What do I do?' Well, the first thing you do is go to the manager and go, 'What am I not doing that I need to be doing to get in this team?' Right. He's going to tell me. Then I go to work on a training pitch.
"Every day I go to work. I play up against whoever, Bruno [Fernandes] etc, and I start dominating them. Just that's the type of mentality and mindset he has to go with. And then when the chance comes to play, take it with both hands.
"Now his argument right now will be I'm not getting the chance to take it. And that's a fair argument. But what I would say is do not let the chance come and you're not ready. So train hard, be focused."

Man United should be very mindful of the young talents they are pushing away. Other top teams are buying or investing in young talents as a build up or future project, & indeed, young projects are for future projects. Whoever is destroying Man United like this should really stop.

Man Utd had a chance to nurture young and exciting talents and build their attack with them, but they lost that. Imagine Garnacho, Hojlund and Amad as the front three while Kobbie Maino is right behind them dazzling. But a club that is always unable to harness the quality of good players has lost that opportunity again. Let's see how Amorim and his brother, Bruno Fernandez will get Man Utd to the height they belong to. We are watching and observing as always.
Don't put Bruno in that picture. It's so annoying when some so called United fans talk bad about a player who has been the singular shining light all these seasons in a frustrating team.

I won't blame Mainoo if he leaves because he's kept his head down and acted maturely despite his age. Amorim talks too much and it was stûpid of him to say that Mainoo has to fight with Bruno for game time, indirectly telling him he won't see much playing time. Mainoo can play as a DM so why not let him play alongside Bruno? Casemiro is getting old and Ugerte isn't it at all. In the case of Garnacho, one can't fault the coach much because of the lad's attitude but for Mainoo's case the coach, who still can't win matches despite the upgrades, is to blame.

Any manager that can't embrace flexibility but only sticks to one unproductive formation is not a manager but a fraud. He will ruin players' careers for his own ineptitude. Furthermore, what is Bruno bringing to the table? that player is a fraud, he has succeeded in making fans and inept Amorim believe he's a good player but in truth, contributes nothing. Why must Maino fight and compete with Bruno when he is better than Bruno. Signing Amorim was a mistake.

You these English Pundits just flatter your boys for nothing. Instead of you telling him to work harder you are there playing games. What exceptional thing did he do when given the chance against Grimsby.
so, one bad game is all it takes to condemn a playing that has been so good for 2 season all through? who are you?

Rio has spoken well..when your boss in your office says you're not doing well what should be your reaction when you know you're being paid well?at least you should ask the area you're not doing well and find a way to work on it because you don't want to lose your job..but the young players we have these days are full of ego..and don't want to work hard but wants their employers to accept them the way dey are and that is not possible.. Ronaldo kept on working hard and see where he his today..if you watch this Barca young lad yamal he is a very hard working boy always giving his all in a match fighting to the end..you can't hide yamal in any match in the league..but you can't say the same about Kobe mainoo..in my opinion mainoo is talented but pride is creeping in just like rashy and sancho...see what rashy is playing in Barca and see what Sancho has become..the likes of Paul schools, rio and keane was not like this..they all were people that waited for opportunity to be given to them and they made go use of it with humility but almost all the united lads are proud and lazy.their mates are working and and taking their clubs to win trophies and they here in united collecting and demanding for big big salaries..we all should know that as the CEO of a company you cannot be paying big salaries to worker without any productivity.

Here Amorim is a quiet not good at all why he’s letting mainoo to be in such a huge competition with a skipper Bruno Fernandez and this system Amorim is using of changing players positions is not good at all and this system of playing with three defenders is wrong his system it’s not really suiting up with us it needs a quick change before we get far with the season ,and he must put back Bruno Fernandez back to his real position as he have been doing it greatly since,if this is not what Amorim is going to do let him sacked as soon as the club management can do,coz we feel bad for our beloved club MU getting beaten each and every game due to a lack of good First eleven on the pitch and what is the use of B Sesko to be here now instead of Sesko to begin the game he is benched while he is there to play a full number 9,us supporters here around the world we are ever shocked for such nonsense ever and if we draw or loose tomorrow may the Ruben Amorim and his lovely family get out of Manchester united back to Portugal for real now no mercy to be awarded him for such participation since the current season thank you

Amorin is the problem always making excuses. Don't let this young players leave. Senior players had to teach them to control their attitude ( if they don't) bye. Good results depends on the manager. Rio 👈👍Man Utd💪

When this club is going stop being emotional with overrated academy players who r selfish
The same academy player you sold to Napoli last season won Series A best of the season and his on the bollo d'or nomination. You are the verge of selling Garnacho, now another one. Is that how Barcelona are selling their own academy players? The coach must change his tactical approach that's limiting the club academy players playing time. No players is happy sitting on the bench, the same player that was doing very well and the club considered as the future of the team are now sitting on the bench since Amorin came in and you think he will be happy. Put yours in his shoes and i know how it feels

That's the problem at United. Mainoo is more in the headlines than youngsters like Yamal yet on the pitch one is as good as Messi and the other plays on crutches.
