Rivaldo has criticised Barcelona's tendency to throw away games after Ernesto Valverde's side lost from a winning position against Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana.
"Barcelona can't keep falling asleep in important matches. It's frustrating," Rivaldo told Betfair.
"The way they controlled game was so that they could go [comfortably] ahead, but the team can't fall asleep at the back in a match against such a big opponent coach by Diego Simeone.
"Simeone is an enthusiastic coach off the pitch, he's always shouting at his players, motivating them so that they give a bit more and, maybe, this is what Barcelona are missing at the moment."
Ernesto Valverde's job is once again under scrutiny for the manner of the defeat, especially after similar losses to Roma and Liverpool in recent years.
"I'm sure that this defeat doesn't benefit Valverde in any way," Rivaldo said.
"It reminded me of the previous fiascos in the Champions League.
"After losing in Saudi Arabia, the club could put his job at serious risk. I don't see [Valverde staying] as a possibility now or even at the end of the season because a club like Barcelona can't keep losing games like this, in such a negligent manner."
Rivaldo also gave his thoughts on Zinedine Zidane's job at Real Madrid, who are challenging Barcelona for the LaLiga Santander title.
"If anyone had doubts about the qualities of Zidane as a coach, after his first spell at Real Madrid, I think that he's dispelling them and showing that he can manage a squad and egos carefully, but he also has good playing systems and pushing his teams to compete well," he noted.

Barcelona to win a European trophy with Valverde will be a cold day in hell. His tactics are even confusing to his own squad.

The problem isn't Valverde. This team is already lowdown. More disgrace is awaiting us in the Champions league. Barcelona players are well suited for only Spanish style of play and finds it difficult beating teams in Europe. The simple facts are that the team doesn't have a blend of other leagues exposure. Messi and the other senior players had their entire career's in Spain and are now predictable. Please, take a cursory look at the league table in England and Italy. The team at the third rung on the league table has accumulated more points than Barcelona and Madrid have in Spain even with the same number of games. What this implies is that Messi can't score 30+ goals a season in England or Italy. And yet he's celebrated the more in Spain. Football has left Spain long long ago. Not until there's that mixture of players with core experience in either England or Italy, Barcelona would continue to slag behind elite teams in Europe. I want to believe Messi sensed this all along, the reason he's not exported his talent outside Spain. Would he Messi, would've won the sixth ballon d'Or in England? I honestly doubt so. Would he have dominated the scene in either England or possibly Italy for this long? No. The example of Neymar in France is a lesson for all. I can predict that Barcelona wouldn't be able to win the Champions league title again in this decade. No this wouldn't be possible, not with the capitulation at firstly Rome and Antfield. For as long Messi plies his trade in Spain and the Barcelona belief in him, this team would successively be ridiculed.
