Real Madrid star Rodrygo Goes has taken the time to thank Carlo Ancelotti, after helping him through what he has described as ‘a very difficult time’ before the end of last season. The Brazilian forward did not play for the final month of Ancelotti’s tenure, but clearly Rodrygo did not hold it against the Brazilian national team manager.
Many speculated that Rodrygo would be on his way out this summer, after seemingly losing his place in the Real Madrid team, and failing to appear after the Copa del Rey final at the end of April. His lack of minutes at the Club World Cup then placed his future in even more doubt.
Rodrygo told TNT Sports Brasil (via MD) that he was slowly getting back up to full speed following some form of ordeal, although he did not give details on what exactly that was.
“I’m slowly getting back into my form, after everything I’ve been through. I went through a very difficult time at the end of last season. I want to thank my family for being there for me during this time. I want to thank Ancelotti, because he knows better than anyone what I’ve been through and he’s helped me a lot.”
Under Alonso at the Club World Cup, Rodrygo started just once, and only came off the bench for short periods. This season he has started two of Los Blancos’ five games, but Rodrygo is fighting for his chances.
“I dedicate myself every day, waiting for the opportunity. I know Xabi Alonso has been changing his game a lot. He started this season by putting me more on the left, but everyone knows I can play inside, on the right, like always.”
Over the last two international breaks, Ancelotti has left Rodrygo out of his first two Brazil squads, declaring that his selections will be decided on the pitch. It puts Rodrygo’s presence at the 2026 World Cup under threat.
“Everyone knows that no one has a guaranteed place, Carlo Ancelotti has always made that clear. I will continue working, giving my best. I know my potential, I know everything I can give. If I’m in good physical and mental health, I can help.”
It has certainly been a strange period for Rodrygo, who clearly was dealing with more issues than just competition for places in recent months. It appears Alonso is keen to use him in his more natural position on the left, and the feeling is very much that Rodrygo’s future at the club will be determined by the coming nine months.

Rodrygo has to be given the chance and minutes he has shown that in the past he is young Alonso knows that and I hope we keep him because he is a great asset to our team. I remember him coming off the bench late in the game and scoring two goals in like ten minutes so we know he is capable of doing great things at the club that everyone lives and will do everything in their power to sustain that. Truly believe in Rodrygo love this kid
It's 2 goals in 96 seconds, 7th may 2022 😁
