The 37-year-old was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition, according to reports in Portugal.
The footballing world reacted to the news on Wednesday afternoon by sending the World Cup winner messages of support on social media.
Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois Tweeted: 'Strength Iker Casillas', while Madrid captain Sergio Ramos posted three praying hands emojis onto the platform.
