Cristiano Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel in frustration after Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw against Everton.

There was shock before the game when it was announced that the Portuguese superstar would start the game on the bench.

United took the lead through Anthony Martial but couldn't find a winner after Andros Townsend bagged a second half equaliser.

After the final whistle the 36-year-old was seen muttering to himself and visibly looked angry after he stormed down the tunnel.

Since Ronaldo made his comeback against Newcastle last month, United have now failed to win four out of their seven games in all competitions.

It was the second time they dropped points in what is expected to be a fiercely contested Premier League title fight this season, after they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa at Old Trafford last weekend.

When asked about Ronaldo's post-match reaction with the game, his former United teammate Rio Ferdinand said he could 'understand' his frustration.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: (He's) Disappointed with the result. He scored five in five, he wanted to continue that form and shoot his team to victory – I understand his frustrations.

'You have to say with the depth of the squad that United should still get that done. Everton didn’t have their first-choice strikers. Nine games without a clean sheet is poor for United.'

Ferdinand's co-pundit Jermaine Jenas added: 'He wants to win a league, he understands importance of points, he’s fuming. For a manager that’s a blessing, he’s bound to be upset.'

Jenas was also puzzled by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decision to leave out Cristiano Ronaldo saying it would give Everton confidence to see his name not on the teamsheet.

Ferdinand responded to Jenas: 'Cristiano has five in five, would you see other people take out their top goal scorers?

'Would Kane, Aguero at City, Salah – but he’s (Ronaldo) 36 and you have to manage his load. If they had another game on Tuesday and next week but the question for me is that he’s going international duty for Qatar and Luxembourg?'

Jenas added: 'Why are they managing his load. Did you see him in the Euros, played every game. To me today didn’t feel like the type of game to rest your star man.'

Many supporters were quick to turn on Solskjaer, with social media quickly becoming awash with complaints regarding the decision before the game, which was compounded by the fact Paul Pogba had also been benched.

'Does Ole think it's a cup game!?' wrote one baffled fan.

Another added: 'Pogba Ronaldo on the bench…..Martial Fred McTominay starting! Clearly wants to bore Everton into defeat!'

Taking things to a more extreme level, another Twitter user went all out and said under-fire Solskjaer deserves to be sacked simply for leaving Ronaldo out of the line up.
