Cristiano Ronaldo's sister has launched a fierce defence of her brother after he came under fire for missing the funeral of Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota.
The Al-Nassr star was noticeably absent as friends, family and team-mates gathered in Gondomar on Saturday to say farewell to Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday morning.
While Portugal internationals including Bernardo Silva, Diogo Dalot, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves attended, Ronaldo chose to stay away, reportedly telling Jota's wife Rute Cardoso and parents that he did not want to risk turning the funeral into a media circus with his presence.
The 40-year-old has faced criticism in Portugal for his decision, with some pundits describing his absence as 'inexplicable' and fans calling it 'inadmissible' for the national team captain not to break his holiday to pay respects.
But his sister Katia Aveiro hit back in a series of emotional Instagram posts, insisting that her brother's decision was wise and blasting those who 'criticise for nothing'.
'When my father died. In addition to the pain of loss we had to deal with a flood of cameras and curious onlookers at the cemetery and everywhere we went,' she wrote.
'And attention was not what it is today in terms of access... At no time were we (the children) able to leave the chapel; it was only possible at the time of the burial, such was the commotion.
'At the funeral, there were presidents, coaches of the national team at the time, such as Luis Filipe Scolari, etc. I don't remember seeing any of them. And they certainly greeted me. The pain blinded me.'
Aveiro added: 'About pain/family and real support... You will never know what it means until you go through it. If someone sends me a message criticising anything my brother does, I will block it (completely ignore it), that is, they will only do it once.
'It's getting tiring. The fanaticism. The criticism for nothing, I repeat nothing... Sick society... We all have families. It is absurdly shameful to watch TV channels/commentators/social networks emphasising an absence (wise) rather than respectfully honouring the pain of a mutilated family destroyed by the loss of two brothers. I am even ashamed to watch. Regrettable.
'And so the world goes... Society and opinion. Today they are worthless. They themselves have become bottomless pits. I feel sorry... And war is also like that. Believe me. Human evil is also a war. And every day we have to fight against it. And so it goes.'
Ronaldo had earlier shared an emotional tribute on Instagram following the news of Jota and Silva's deaths, saying: 'It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.'
The Portugal captain, who was reportedly on holiday in Majorca at the time of the funeral, has yet to publicly address his absence, although reports claim he personally spoke to Jota's family to express his condolences and assure them of his ongoing support.

I think his sister is right most of the media will be focusing on Ronaldo instead Jota funeral. Glad he didn’t show up otherwise instead of watching funeral they would be showing Ronaldo.

Ok.....I am not defending Cr7.....but enough of making him a headline again even in a funeral ceremony.....just pay respect to Jota and get on with it

Ronaldo’s sister's excuse that Ronaldo stayed away to avoid causing a media frenzy rings hollow in the face of what true leadership demands. As captain, as a senior statesman in the football world, and as someone who publicly mourned Diogo Jota’s death with heartfelt words, he bore a symbolic and moral responsibility to lead his team in grief as he so often leads them in victory. In times of mourning, presence speaks louder than any carefully crafted statement on social media. This was not a red carpet event or a press junket; it was a solemn, sacred farewell to a teammate, a brother, a compatriot. Surely, the press would have been managed and Ronaldo, who commands respect like few others in the world of football, could have requested privacy and his wishes would have been respected by the media. It was a funeral ceremony and not a red carpet event. Ronaldo's action is inexcusable.

The replies Ronaldo's Sister made above are so powerful that they're exposing some of stupid people who goes crazy in the comment section. it only takes a wise person to read the whole story in the post understand and get some sense. I can't believe it that despite her sister saying all those valid points in the post above, some folks would still go weird and comment rubbish here.

nonsense cements the guy visited the family a day before te funeral jus because the media won't say it to you and you jus wake up and start mocking the guy.. I see the hate is too much in your head.. the phone call Could be enough... he can always come later on with his time to pay respect to the cemetery.. its normal even some other family members do miss the funeral due to some unfortunate circumstances and can't be hold accountable for not attending...

It's none of your business to make sure who attends the funeral. Yes, CR7 has a responsibility being the national captain of Portugal and as a teammate & he has indeed talked to their family But he knows better about the media than dumb you lol. so stop criticizing and focus on your own life bro.

Ronaldo think of himself too high. Even the death of his friend is a joke to him. What if all his friends did the same to his funeral?

This is what Ronaldo really wants, always drawing attention to himself at someone else big occasion, when his team mates outshine him in a match,he will surely come up with a drama to sway attention of the media by coming up with one drama or the other... example ..Bale outshone him,in a champions league final, the next thing Ronaldo came up with transfer saga.. This just concluded Nation league won by Portugal,Mendes the wing back was the star of the day,but Ronaldo came up with his usual theatrics and stole the whole show. A brother of mine, bet that Ronaldo will surely not surely finish the final match,if he ended up scoring one goal and exactly that played out, that my brother won ₦100,000 that night. The highest of it all,he not attending the burial will certainly draw much attention after the burial than his presence...Just like it is at the moment.. Ronaldo is very cunning,he knows how to gain media attention.. God forbid bad thing,if it had been any of his family member would he have given such an excuse? what a bad attitude..

only a narcissist would think him attending a funeral of a teammate who died in tragic circumstances would be bigger than the funeral itself. this dude needs to get over himself
