Ronaldo suffers FIRST defeat as captain at club level following United's loss

Cristiano Ronaldo was a shadow of the goal-scoring phenomenon football fans are so used to seeing during Man United's loss to Wolves, and the Portuguese also lost a proud career record on Monday night.

A sublime finish from Ronaldo's countryman Joao Moutinho was the difference as Bruno Lage's side outclassed the Red Devils to take all three points on a miserable night for the hosts at Old Trafford.

United's interim boss Ralf Rangnick handed Phil Jones his first Red Devils appearance in two years after captain Harry Maguire was unavailable through injury.

As a result, the armband was given to Ronaldo, who skippered the side for the first time since returning to Manchester last summer.

The 36-year-old is the captain of his national side but has rarely worn the armband at club level. He led United out on Monday night, only the 11th time he has done so for a club during his illustrious career.

During that time, the Mirror reports that he has never lost a game while wearing the captain's armband. That was, of course, until Moutinho - Portugal's second-most capped player behind Ronaldo - scored the winner at Old Trafford.

United defender Luke Shaw suggested that a dressing room inquest may follow after the Red Devils were outplayed by Wolves on home turf.

'Not good enough, we really struggled, we couldn't get hold of the ball and when we didn't have the ball we weren't aggressive enough. We didn't put them under any pressure,' he told Sky Sports.

'It maybe looked like an easy game for them. A disappointing performance and result. We didnt have many options on the ball and we weren't on the front foot.

'We have to put more pressure on them, we have to have intensity. Us players, we have been here a long time, maybe tonight we struggled, I didn't think we were all there together. You look at the players we have, we have unbelievable quality but sometimes quality is not enough.

'We need to bring the intensity and more motivation. Inside the dressing room, we know what we want but out on the pitch we need to give 100 per cent. To win these types of games we all need to be 100 per ceny committed. It is tough and disappointing.'
