In the fourth round of the Champions League group stage, Manchester United came from behind to beat Roma 3-2 at home. After the match, Manchester United legend Rooney said that Carrick played a crucial role in inspiring Manchester United's second-half comeback and deserved "a lot of credit."
Manchester United were two goals down at halftime, but thanks to a penalty from Bruno Fernandes and a brace from Matheus Cunha, the team eventually turned the game around, ending a nine-game winless streak.
Rooney said: "I think Carrick deserves a lot of credit too. If you were in his position, you would definitely be thinking about how to turn things around.
"Whatever he said to the team at halftime made the players play more proactively in the second half and made them believe they could win the game.
"You could feel it, you could feel they had a chance to win, and everyone was united."
