With Manchester United on the search for a new permanent first-team boss, club legend Roy Keane has thrown a current Premier League manager's hat into the ring
Roy Keane reckons Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe should become the next Manchester United head coach. And Howe has already addressed the possibility.
After just 14 months in the job, Ruben Amorim was sacked as manager of United earlier this week due to a communication breakdown. The Portuguese boss gave an explosive press conference on Sunday in the wake of his side's 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Darren Fletcher has been handed the keys in the interim and his team were held 2-2 by Burnley on Wednesday. The current plan is to find a caretaker boss to guide the side until the summer, when a long-term replacement can be found.
Many names have been bandied about regarding who will become the next to grace the Old Trafford hot seat and club legend Keane thinks Newcastle's Howe would be perfect. But the Englishman has already responded to such a suggestion and he didn't mince his words.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane was asked about his ideal next United boss and said: "I like what Howe has done, he's managed a lot of games, his teams play good football.
"I know he has his critics, but I like what he's done at Newcastle, even at Bournemouth. He's managed 700, 800 games. I like his calmness - I think Man Utd sometimes need a bit of that.
"I like people with emotion. I'm quite an emotional person, but his calmness, what he's done at Newcastle. Getting them into the Champions League, winning a Cup. I'd be happy to see him go in there."
But Howe was questioned this week and asked whether anything could tempt him away from his current role at St James' Park. He replied: "No. Not at this current time.
"The most important thing for me is happiness in the role, happiness in the job, the relationships that I have with the people around me.
"That has not always been consistently good," he admitted. "Things can change at any football club, but I'm very happy at the moment."
When it comes to who will take charge of United until the end of the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as a frontrunner. The Norwegian was at the helm of his former club for nearly three years from 2018 to 2021.
Keane believes his former team-mate could do a good job in the position, but it would strictly have to be a temporary employment. Keane said: "Do I think it's the right or wrong answer - I don't know.
"But if it is until the end of the season, I think Ole would do alright until the end of the season. Do I see Ole as the manager for the next four or five seasons, getting Man Utd competing again, probably not."
