Manchester United and Ruben Amorim are open to selling the bulk of their squad but Danny Murphy insists the Red Devils would be crazy to offload youngster Kobbie Mainoo
Danny Murphy concedes he would "be shocked" to see Manchester United sell Kobbie Mainoo as talk of his exit this summer continues. The Red Devils are looking to increase their budget and all options are being considered.
Mainoo is into his second year with the senior squad having been at the Premier League club since he was young. He burst onto the scene and was a shining light during a poor campaign under Erik ten Hag. He's remained a bright light under Ruben Amorim, albeit his minutes have been limited.
The midfielder is now an England international and stood up during last summer's Euro 2024 campaign, which saw the Three Lions make the final. There is notable interest in Mainoo and, as an academy product, the Manchester outfit could bank any fee as pure profit on their balance sheet.
Amorim needs to bring in his own players if he is to be a success at Old Trafford, but Mainoo again showed his value in the week as he came off the bench to score the equaliser in their dramatic win over Lyon. Alejandro Garnacho is another man linked with the exit door but Murphy insists the pair have huge potential and must be retained.
He wrote in the Daily Mail : "Mainoo and Garnacho are two talented, hungry players capable of having a big impact for United over the next five years or more, whether that’s under Amorim or any other manager. If I was Amorim, I would be talking to Mainoo, talking to my bosses, and making sure he stayed. I would still be shocked to see him leave in the summer."
The ex-Liverpool man insists, whatever the Manchester outfit sell Mainoo for, they would even to shell out even more to land a player of his quality. He cited the decision to sell Scott McTominay back in the summer, another academy player, only to see him do well in Napoli.
Murphy also pointed to United's lack of options in the middle of the park as another reason why keeping Mainoo is so key. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen remain at the club, but both men are the wrong side of 30 and tipped to leave this summer, leaving more gaps to fill.
Amorim hasn't been shy in pointing out Mainoo's flaws, which are why he's sometimes been left on the bench. The teenager has also had to adapt to playing in a two-man midfield, but Murphy insists his weaknesses are normal for a player his age and that good things will come.
He said: "I am surprised he has not featured more for United this season, especially with their problems in midfield, although I appreciate he has had injuries. I know Amorim thinks there has been weaknesses in his defensive work in certain games but that’s normal for a young midfielder in the Premier League who is adapting to playing different positions in United’s system."

haha whenthe club have unsellable players like mount, sancho, rasford, shaw etc because of their average game and high wages, the only way to keep club functioning is by selling the players who are performing..

Amorim's tactics are already quite good. It's just that Man United don't have a quality striker and need to find a new goalkeeper who's better than Onana

Pay Mainoo what he deserves and he'll stay. Lack of suitors is not a problem for a player of his qualities and huge potential; plain and simple!

The same happened with sancho so far all players that were kicked out Man U are doing really good else where they don’t do good at Manchester United coach doesn’t want them to play good so he can go get is own players tell me where in snoring contract it says that he has to change the whole team mainoo started to shine even at national team and Amorim already want to sell him
the coach knows what he is doing.managing a team with more injured players can really be frustrating. He is right about not wanting Sancho or even Rashford because having a bad attitude can pollute all.He knows what he is going through and is not everything that is made public.About both players playing well in other clubs is because they know that they would be flushed off if they ever exhibit their bad altitude that they did in Man Utd there.By the way, Sancho is having not so good time as Chelsea is not interested in keeping him

Amorim was a success in his country, but that doesn't mean he will be a success at United...Playing only 3 at the Back is awful, that might have worked in Lisbonne but not here..we are nearly ending this season and we're still in an uncomfortable 14th position...I won't say he's a bad trainer but managing in Premier League is a different history..Either he change or he's dead soon...
At ETH helm, we were languishing 13 th in table. but Amorin has guided us to semis of Europa & are major contenders for Europa glory. Rightfully getting rid of players not suited his style of play. Major cleansing of squad will be a top priority. ETH had an awful summer transfer in which Antony, Onana, Mount are major liability. Only Ugarte, Yoro, Mazraoui & to some extent De ligt are ok. Let's give him a season or two to see where he stands. Backing for a strong finish to the season.

I know nobody ask my opinion but I will give you anyway my opinion is if Amorim only can coach the players he had at sporting he should go back to sporting This idiot isn’t a coach imagine wolfs were in bad shape did vitor pereira get rid of the whole team To start getting results a good coach should be able to turn any team around all the players that leave Man U they are successful else where first he got rid of rashford This guy came to fix Man U or to sell all the best players
You have some point, but not completely. Coaches changes their players to suit their styles, especially when dey see that d player can not play their system or he is finding it hard to adapt to the system. Rashford was not even ready to try & see if he can play in dt system. Every coach has his style & a player dt suit his system. let's use PEP GUADIOLA as an example, pep sold all the players he met in CITY & left only KDB, if u look at KDB, he is a world class player, he is d biggest player in EPL. I like kobbie Mainoo & i want him to try & work on him also but what if is not working? or what if d club will not be patient with him more than next season & he keep trying and nothing is working? Will Man U not sack him?

Because they want the players to play for free the stupid new owner is the biggest problem together with the coach how do you explain that rashford played 4 games for Amorim scored 3 goals and gets kicked out cuz he isn’t doing good on training is that the case or is it because he is the best paid player

Amorim said he would play United youngsters from now on and rest the older players Europa competition, it's cool to hear that, but it is also time to see which other style of play can work for him, otherwise, it will be the same old story next season.

I do not understand Manchester United's management. They do not seem to learn a lesson at all. Look at current players who were bought from another league. They struggle to adapt. How many games will.it take to adopt next season if United end up selling their homegrown players left and right? Besides that, Ruben Amorim should as a Coach have an alternative playing style not just three at the back. In any game, you should be able to change especially tough games.I do not see a problem with current players, they are doing their best, and need to be given time too. Selling Kobie, Rashfotd, Sancho, and Garnasho will be big mistakes. Let them settle into a new style, give them time. There are other areas that you need to look not attackers.

Not true. He's not even been talked about being sold. He hasn't signed a contract extension that's up to him. Not the club. Maybe if we win Europa league it will convince him to sign. Only chance for having some sort of decent season next year. By getting champions league.
So, you are happy with how man united is playing SMH

They want to watch Mainoo flop like Rashford. Truth be told, Mainoo has more room for improvement but Manchester United currently can’t develop him to that height. Loan him let him go and develop elsewhere like Dortmund. Manchester United now needs already developed players like Fernandez was before coming to United. Otherwise they are going to watch their players lose form for NOTHING.
