Ruben Amorim told to immediately sell Manchester United's two 'selfish' players

Former Man Utd coach Rene Meuelensteen has laid into wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, claiming both have failed to deliver and need to be moved on this summer

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meuelensteen says Ruben Amorim must offload Antony and Alejandro Garnacho this summer. Meuelensteen, Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant at United, branded Antony “selfish” and said Garnacho is “bad for the club” in a brutal attack.

Dutch coach Meuelensteen also said Ajax could not believe United paid £80million for Antony and were “doing cartwheels” when the fee was agreed.

United are looking to get rid of Antony and Garnacho this summer, to raise funds to allow Amorim to rebuild his under-performing squad. Other players will also be moved on in a major summer revamp, but Meuelensteen said United must start with their two wasteful wingers.

“I wouldn't bring Antony back because I've seen enough of him that he's not cut out for the club and not good enough,” Meuelensteen told Tipman Tips. "His performances are fuelled by his personality and are not for the good of the team, he’s selfish.

“You will never get your £80m back from Antony. I thought it was stupid business at the time when I heard it was happening. I know that when they heard about the deal in Amsterdam, they were doing cartwheels. It shows again that players in those lower leagues, like Holland, are completely different.

“They're playing very different styles, a slower tempo. Teams like Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord are the best, so it's easy for them to look good. But coming into the Premier League is so much different. What is Antony’s return? How many goals and assists has he got? He's probably got as many, if not more, in Spain than in England, that different kind of football is more ideal for him.”

Meulensteen also laid into Garnacho, who was told by Amorim to find a new club after the sulky winger hit out at his boss after being dropped for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

“Garnacho is the same as Antony,” said Meuelensteen. “Yes, he’s a young boy but, personality-wise, some things are not right with him and he's bad for the club. That shows in his performances and lack of consistency.

“He’s a young player who has good value to him, so if they were to get offered any sort of money, they should cut their losses, because he isn’t going to live up to his potential at Old Trafford and that can free up some money to spend elsewhere.”

Meuelensteen also called on Amorim to replace error-prone goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer. “It’s vital they look to replace Onana,” he said. “If you look at United's history, they started building a successful team through the goalkeeper, with Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and David De Gea. They must bring confidence to the defence as that galvanises the whole back line.

“There are some major frailties and plenty of mistakes. If there's a better goalkeeper available, they should take them. Having a really good goalkeeper lays the foundations and is massively important.”
