Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has admitted he is 'devastated' the club will not be involved in the Champions League next season.

Manchester United thrashed Chelsea 4-1 at Old Trafford to move up to third in the Premier League and in the process take the last available place in the top-four.

Salah has insisted Liverpool players have let fans and 'ourselves down' having failed to achieve 'the bare minimum'.

The Egyptian tweeted: ''I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.

We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.

Erik Ten hag's side went into Thursday's match well aware that only a point would secure their return to Europe's elite competition.

But Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all scored against Chelsea to achieve the feat in style.

Meanwhile, Newcastle secured their own return to the Champions League after over 20 years after a stalemate 0-0 draw with Leicester on Monday night.

It means Liverpool will play in the Europa League for the first time since they lost in the final to Sevilla in the 2015-16 season.
