A famous player dies, and we see many of our brothers asking for mercy for him and expressing sympathy and sorrow over his death, yet no one stops to question whether this is permissible or what the scholars say about such matters. As for the scholars’ opinion, the majority have stated that asking for mercy for such disbelievers and polytheists is an act of disobedience! Yes, the one who says “RIP” is disobeying Allah and His Messenger. How can you say to him “Rest in Peace (RIP)” — how can he be at peace when he died in a state of disbelief? My brothers, there is an important matter called al-walā’ wal-barā’ (loyalty and disavowal), and many Muslims are unaware of it. Allah said to His Prophet when he wanted to seek forgiveness for his uncle who had defended him in Mecca and helped him in conveying the message: > “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the companions of the Fire.” [Qur’an 9:113] The Prophet (peace be upon him) never once said “May Allah have mercy on you” to a non-Muslim, even when the Jews would come to him, sneeze beside him and say “Alhamdulillah” hoping he would respond with “May Allah have mercy on you.” He (peace be upon him) would instead say: “May Allah guide you.” So what about someone who dies in a state of disbelief? And when you post their pictures and show mercy, it creates the illusion that even if they were polytheists, they might be forgiven — and this can impact the next generation. When a great Islamic scholar dies, only students of knowledge are seen asking for mercy and sharing news of his death. But when a disbeliever, who in Allah’s sight is worth less than the wing of a mosquito, dies, many of us rush to share the news and write “RIP” next to it. Fear Allah and spread awareness and correct knowledge.
