Scholes mocks Liverpool: Club World Cup is less important than BADMINTON trophy

Paul Scholes has ridiculed Liverpool's Club World Cup success after claiming his 'badminton trophy' is more important.

Scholes was part of the Manchester United team who won the tournament back in 2008, as well as the side who lifted the Intercontinental Cup in 1999.

But Scholes says the achievement is well down his lengthy list of honours after commenting on Liverpool's considerable celebrations after winning the trophy.

The Reds beat Flamengo 1-0 after extra-time last week and then posed for an extensive catalogue of pictures to mark the success - much to Scholes' bemusement.

'You want to win it once you're there but it was never something we were desperate to win,' he told BBC Radio Five Live.

'If someone asked me what trophies I won over the years, I don't think I'd mention the Club World Cup.

'I'm being serious. It's one of them, it may take more importance over the years. It looks like Liverpool have enjoyed it and will mention it and why not? But when we were playing it wasn't that important.

'When you look back you're quite happy but it wasn't something you set out to achieve as a player.'

Scholes was then asked by Robbie Savage whether his Club World Cup medal was more important than his badminton trophy. He replied: 'My badminton medal probably.

Liverpool's Club World Cup success saw them become the second British club to win the tournament following on from United being crowned world champions in 2013.

Chelsea also contested a Club World Cup final against Corinthians back in 2012 but were beaten 1-0 by the Brazilian side in Japan.
