Scotland manager Steve Clarke told The Daily Telegraph that McTominay might still be at Manchester United and playing a key role if he had received better support instead of criticism from social media keyboard warriors.
The Scotland manager insisted that McTominay's current achievements are fully deserved and stated that his departure from Manchester United clearly shows how a player can become a victim of "keyboard warriors."
"People think his story is amazing, but he's just another example of how social media criticism affects players," Clarke told The Daily Telegraph Sport. "He played for Manchester United, and every manager picked him."
"Sometimes he wouldn't start. Sometimes he'd come off the bench, but he was always involved, always getting game time."
"If he had received the same support from Manchester United fans instead of criticism from social media keyboard warriors, perhaps he would still be there now and would be a key player for Manchester United."
"I don't think he was too unhappy about the move to Italy."
