Inter Miami star Sergio Busquets was honored at Chase Stadium on Saturday night, with players, officials and supporters paying tribute to the legendary Spain midfielder.
Busquets recently announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2025 MLS campaign, hoping to help Inter Miami to the MLS Cup title. Now 37, Busquets is a product of the famed FC Barcelona academy and he spent 15 years with the senior team, establishing himself as one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.
With nine LaLiga titles, three Champions Leagues and a World Cup winners’ medal to his name, there is a lot of wisdom that Busquets could pass on to the younger generations. But speaking to reporters on Saturday, he revealed that he wants to take some time off first.
“I think in the future, yes [I’d want to be a coach], but for now I’d rather take a sabbatical,” he said. “It’s a long time, with hardly any weekends. Like any footballer, obviously, playing for the national team and everything gives you another plus, but you also have less time.
“You want to enjoy time with your family, time for me, for them, seeing my children, being with them, traveling more, watching football from a different perspective. And then, in the future, we’ll see.
He continued: “In theory, yes, but let’s focus on the present, as there’s still a long way to go.”
Before he can hang up his famous boots, there is still the small matter of the MLS Cup playoffs. Miami have missed out on the Supporters’ Shield title but it is the postseason that is their real focus this year. Saturday’s win appears to have secure a spot in the top four of the Eastern Conference, giving them home advantage for the first round, and they will be a fearsome proposition for any team in the league.
