Although many in Mexico expected him to continue with Rayados de Monterrey, Sergio Ramos’s recent decision seems to lean more towards leaving Mexican football than staying, according to El Chiringuito.
This would not signal the end of his career, however, but rather a return to Spain and Europe, where he would continue playing if he finds an offer that satisfies him.
Several factors influenced his choice, but two stand out: family life in Mexico versus Spain, and the dream of representing the national team at the World Cup.
The latter remains a realistic goal for Ramos, who believes that regular playing time in a league closer to the Spanish style and at a top competitive level could persuade Luis de la Fuente to consider him for a call-up.
Aymeric Laporte made a similar move, leaving Saudi Arabia for Athletic, with the added encouragement of his national team coach after recent tournament involvement. Ramos, who will turn 40 in March, last played for Spain in 2021 and was not called up by Luis Enrique for Euro 2020 or the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, nor by Luis de la Fuente for Euro 2024.
During his time at Monterrey, Ramos has left a significant mark, even featuring in the Club World Cup and scoring in the tournament. The defensive solidity that has defined his career was evident at one of Mexico’s biggest clubs, and his commercial and media impact has been undeniable.
Yet the end of this chapter appears clear, as does his return to Europe. Sergio Ramos’s ambition to reach new heights is guiding him in this direction.
