Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is full of excitement about what the New Year has in store for himself and Manchester United.
The in-form Reds will be looking to record a fourth successive Premier League win under his stewardship as caretaker manager, when up against Newcastle United this evening (Wednesday).
The team travel to St. James’ Park for our first match of 2019 in confident mood and Ole is looking forward to seeing what can be achieved in the months ahead.
“I’ve got to say, going into the new year the way I've done, I've never done [before] but I'm so excited about the new year,” the Norwegian told MUTV.
“I'm just going to enjoy my time here now. Working with players of this quality, when you're a coach or a manager, you think 'this will be enjoyable'.”
‘PLAY LIKE A MAN UNITED TEAM’
United thumped Solskjaer’s former club Cardiff City 5-1 in his only away game in charge so far, before recording equally comfortable wins over Huddersfield Town (3-1) and Bournemouth (4-1) at Old Trafford.
Much like Cardiff and Huddersfield, Newcastle are embroiled in the battle to avoid relegation but have made life tough for top-half teams already this season on Tyneside – running Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal close in narrow 2-1 defeats.
However, Ole has reiterated his message that his players should concentrate on themselves and carrying on the momentum the Reds have been building.
“That’s what I say to the boys – if we’re thinking too much about the opposition, our own play will be diluted,” he said.
“So we should just focus on ourselves. Newcastle cause one problem different to what Bournemouth will do. So [we'll watch] one or two clips about the opposition, but the rest is about us. Play the way we should do, and play like a Man United team.
“Away from home, it doesn't have to be all-out attack, gung-ho, but of course it's going to be with a foundation and [then] go forward when we can.”
‘WE PLAYED SOME UNBELIEVABLE STUFF THAT DAY’
Solskjaer enjoyed some memorable matches against Newcastle during his playing days at United, scoring four goals in 14 appearances against them.
There is one match in particular that sticks out for Ole – a resounding 6-2 victory at St. James’ Park in April 2003, when he managed to get on the scoresheet in some style.
When asked for his standout memories of facing the Magpies, he recalled: “The goal I scored when I got a ball on the chest, a left-foot volley. I think we were one-nil down at that time, [Jermaine] Jenas scored a great goal, I think, and then the rest of that game we played some unbelievable stuff. I think we won 6-2 in the end. That game was a one-off really, because going up there is really tough, but in that game we were class.”
MUTV will show the full interview with Ole in the build-up to Newcastle v United. Matchday Live will be on air at 18:30 GMT, 90 minutes before kick-off at 20:00 GMT.

He's defo improved them, before he arrived they were 6th and 19 points behind Liverpool, since then he's played 3 won 3, and they are now 19 points behind Liverpool and 6th ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
why is your analogy of the man utd team lopsided? if they were 19points and sixth in position to the leaders, what was their point to the 4th and 5th? and what is their current point to that 4th and 5th. I believe that the Answer will stun you.

United will huff and puff until the end of the season and still won't budge any of the top five teams because they are where they are because of the team they are average and sixth.
Remind me this comment after end of the season

Team already good, they just cbf because of toxic manager. Any nice guy will unleash their skill and win against 3 bottom class clubs. Real test is coming soon. If they win agai st a top level club the Ole is the Man (U).

If Solskjaer keeps this up then throw the job at him! If for whatever reason it doesn't work out then we still need a director of football don't we?? The man lives and breaths United.

How they have fallen. OGS total failure for Cardiff and Norwegian pub league flop. Going to end up getting the job full time as they've beaten the 5 worst teams in the Premier league who just rolled over

Even this Liverpool fan has to admit that Mourinho was insane: with players of the calibre of Martial, Rashford, Lingard and Pogba he went into games with the philosophy of 'We will concede less than you', rather than 'We will score more than you'. Sure, there's problems in defence, but you don't make that any better by not playing to your strengths - the way he had them playing was like using a Ferrari to tow a caravan. Ah well, thanks Jose from a 'Pool fan - it was good while it lasted.

Man U can continue this winning streak and make the top four if they can convince EPL schedule makers to only schedule them to play Championship caliber sides.

Good lad. Keep it up so we can keep Poch. We may not look like winning a trophy now but my God is he a great manager and an even better coach. Best at Spurs in my lifetime anyway.

Think United will finish the 6th best team in the country...too far off 4th imo, they have to keep winning & rely on arsenal & Chelsea dropping points.

I'm pleased for him makes a change to have a positive manager at the helm. With his players playing positive attacking football long may it continue

Too early to get excited, but a positive start! Lots of comments about playing relegation fodder, but worse teams have come to Old Trafford and drawn 0-0 (and deserved more) All football fans want to see goals and attacking play - maybe the run won't continue, but don't see anyone stopping Utd from scoring at Old Trafford again!!!

Lucky for him his results against the worst teams in the league are compared to all Mourinho's games, we will see how he fares against spurs soon and PSG over 2 legs as an example

Three goals conceded one in each game and a man sent off against three poor teams, Ole has made a good start but keep a bit of perspective.

As a neutral I like to young players develop, like Kane and Alli, Alexander Arnold and Gomez, Jose will throw any player under a truck for one mistake, its a miracle that Rashford is still in form, what Jose did to McTomminey was a disgrace.

jose was and still is the best manager in the premiere league He won more trophies and honours than all the rest managers put together Mr Max ,,, and he finished second only next to City. Then the mutineers struck and stopped playing good football. Now they won three these three inferior teams and you hail them as if Ole made a miracle !!!!" duhhhhh some people really beats me how they get their jobs !!!!
