Spain squad relaxed as they hug and joke in training for Russia clash

The confidence that can come with topping your World Cup group was on show in the Spain camp on Thursday, as they trained for their last 16 clash.

Spain edged out Iberian neighbours Portugal at the last minute in Group B, Iran's late penalty equaliser against the Portuguese boosting the Spanish back up to top spot.

They now take on host nation Russia on Sunday afternoon at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow - and the optimism in the camp is evident.

The squad were seen laughing, joking and hugging each other as they warmed up for training at their base in Krasnodar on Thursday.

Stars, including goalkeepers David De Gea and Pepe Reina, seemed in especially good humour and were at the centre of the high jinks.

The session was overseen by manager Fernando Hierro amid the bright summer sun and the shadows stretching across the training field.

Spain have established themselves as among the favourites for the World Cup, despite only winning one match in their group.

They were denied victory in their opener against Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal, and were held to a 2-2 draw by already eliminated Morocco in their last group match.

Their only victory was a narrow 1-0 triumph over Iran - but that was enough for Hierro's men to squeeze into top spot and avoid Uruguay in the last 16.

Instead they will face Russia, with the winner of that match taking on Croatia or Denmark in the quarter-finals.
