Conte blasts media over Napoli doubts: Glass always half empty

Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dismissed doubts about his strikers.

Ahead of tomorrow's Champions League tie with Eintracht Frankfurt, Conte was asked if he was worried with only five goals scored so far this season by his recognised strikers.

But Conte insisted: "Someone must have scored. We're top of the table. Before these two games, there was talk of a lack of consistency. Now we're coming off two clean sheets and we're talking about attack.

"You're always looking at the glass half empty on everything. We've had absurd difficulties since the start of the season and we continue to have them, and I look at the table and Napoli is there. We only hear criticism.

"There's been an absurd inflating of expectations. We had to kill here and there. Whoever arrived had to change the team's outlook. Players like (Romelu) Lukaku, who are crucial, were missing. (Kevin) De Bruyne got injured, (Amir) Rrahmani came back at the last minute, (Stanislav) Lobotka and others got injured. We made up for everything, and then you look at it in your head and say, 'How did they do it?' Do you ask yourself these questions?

"I said we need more goals, but we need to win, but how many more goals has Anguissa scored? Anguissa has three more goals than last year. Let's try to be serious!"

After their hammering by PSV Eindhoven, Napoli need a win against Eintracht Frankfurt, but Conte again bristled over claims they've struggled in Europe.

Napoli fans shouldn't be fooled

Conte continued: "Tomorrow is a match in which we can restore our Champions League standings, but they are a strong opponent, like everyone else.

"We know what we're doing when we're struggling, and I feel compelled to defend this team. When I talk about the Neapolitan fans who shouldn't be fooled, I'm talking precisely about the rumours that are deliberately spread to try to create absurd expectations for the team or to kill it.

"The Neapolitan people must always stand united behind the team, cover their ears. Neapolitan fans are dreamers, and from the outside, they know that it doesn't take much to pump them up, kill them, and cause depression. Let's stay united, listen to the players and the coach, they're the only ones who love the team; from the outside, it's all about the team.

"An interest. We're united, this year will be difficult and complex, I've been telling you that from the start. Kudos to the lads, despite all the difficulties I see in the standings, and I still see us there, and if we win tomorrow, we'll go to six points... if we don't manage that, the others will have been better, so be it, but they'll always find a strong group.

"The atmosphere must be there for us, don't chase after those who create problems, whether too much or too little. Napoli is a problem there, Napoli fighting for the top spots is a problem, I understand that, the others need to get on board with the same mindset. Despite the difficulties, we're there and that's scary."
