Sunderland achieved promotion to the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in last month's Championship play-off final, but the Black Cats could have a major rebuild on their hands
Sunderland could be forced into a major rebuild this summer with six key players linked with moves away from the north east. The Black Cats are preparing for their first season back in the Premier League since their relegation in 2016/17 after winning the play-off final against Sheffield United last month, but may see a significant shift in personnel if the transfer rumours at present are correct.
The club have already seen the departure of Tommy Watson, with the left-winger agreeing a £10million move to Brighton on a four-year contract back in April. And while many Sunderland fans would be content if he was the only star they see leave in the coming months, there are fears that others could join him in parting ways with the Stadium of Light.
Here, Mirror Football looks at the six Sunderland stars who are linked with moves away from Sunderland this summer, from a sensational academy wonderkid, to a highly-touted brother of footballing royalty...
Jobe Bellingham
Jobe Bellingham has been heavily linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer. While the 19-year-old brother of Jude Bellingham has a reported release clause in his contract of £33.7million, the Bundesliga giants may be able to pry him away from the Stadium of Light for less.
Trai Hume
According to reports, full-back Trai Hume is currently being looked at by the likes of Wolves and Everton, as well as numerous La Liga sides. The 23-year-old was instrumental to Sunderland's 2024/25 campaign, known for his last-minute tackles and composure on the ball.
Chris Rigg
Academy graduate Chris Rigg has impressed in the Championship this season, plying his trade as one of Sunderland's stand-out players despite his age of just 17. The teenager has been linked with a move to Everton at present, but has also received reported interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Dan Neil
Elsewhere, club captain Dan Neil has been linked with a surprise move to Roma this summer. The 23-year-old midfielder is currently only under contract at the Stadium of Light until next summer, and with a market value of £6m according to Transfermarkt, the side may cash in on the talent.
Chris Mepham
Centre-half Chris Mepham arrived at the Stadium of Light last August in a season-long loan from Bournemouth, and while he was quickly able to win over the hearts of many Sunderland fans, the 27-year-old is set to return to his parent club unless the Black Cats submit a tempting offer.
Romaine Mundle
Sunderland's only true left-winger at present, Romaine Mundle only made his way to the north east back in February 2024 from Standard Liege. However, the 22-year-old talent now finds himself linked with PSV and Nice. With three years left on his contract however, Sunderland are in no rush to sell.
