The 10 highest scoring sides in Europe in 2023-24: Bayern, Liverpool, Inter…

Plenty of the usual suspects make their way into the top 10 highest scorers in 2023-24, but there is also room for some surprise inclusions on the list.

We’re midway through the campaign and many of the usual suspects feature towards the top end of the goalscoring charts, although there are some surprise packages in place of high-profile absentees like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal.

We’ve taken a closer look at these sides and have ranked the 10 highest-scoring teams in Europe’s top five leagues in 2023-24.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies have endured a strange old season. They sit underwhelmingly in midtable and are out of the League Cup and Champions League, but they’ve beaten PSG, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa – and are among the top-scoring clubs in Europe.

Their 8-0 mauling of Sheffield United showed they can be a force to be reckoned with on their day, while they’ve also put four past Chelsea and Villa.

Enough positives to keep Howe safe for now, you’d reckon.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa look the real deal. The Spanish coach has been in charge of the club for over a year now, and over that period they’ve comfortably and consistently looked a top-four side.

This season they’ve struggled for clean sheets but demonstrated a canny knack for outscoring the opposition.

Last term was the worst full season of Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Anfield but they’ve come roaring back in 2023-24. They sit top of the Premier League table, having suffered just one defeat, and remain in all three of the cup competitions.

Questions remain over Klopp’s best line-up, particularly in attack, but star man Mohamed Salah remains as potent as ever. It will be fascinating to see if their other forwards can continue to pick up the slack while the talisman is away at AFCON.

It’s a cliche to describe Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs as “a breath of fresh air” – but that’s because it’s true.

Tottenham were often miserable as they went from Jose Mourinho to Nuno Espirito Santo to Antonio Conte, so it’s been lovely to see them transformed into one of the Premier League’s most entertaining sides, utterly intent on going at the opposition.

Those who watched Luis Enrique set PSG up with a wildly attacking 4-2-4 formation away to Newcastle in the Champions League will not be surprised to see they’re Ligue 1’s top scorers by a street.

Lionel Messi and Neymar have departed and been replaced by Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele. It’s taken some time for their new-look attack to start clicking, but recent months have shown glimpses that they could be a frightening prospect.

We’re over half way through the La Liga season and Girona, remarkably, sit top of the table, only just ahead of Real Madrid but comfortably ahead of Atletico and Barca.

The Catalan minnows are enjoying a ridiculously good season, only losing to table-toppers Real Madrid. Spanish football’s top-scoring side have looked so complete that some in the media have asked whether they might be capable of doing a Leicester.

Whether they do it or not, Girona are a wonderfully watchable team. Appointment viewing.

Xabi Alonso has done a terrific job since taking charge at Bayer Leverkusen. He joined the club in October last year when they were sat in the relegation zone and then guided them to an unbelievable 6th placed finish.

The German outfit have gone to the next level this season and look well capable of giving Bayern a run for their money this season. They remain unbeaten across all competitions and sit top of the Bundesliga table.

It’s no wonder Real Madrid are sounding out Alonso as Carlo Ancelotti’s potential successor.

`It will come as no surprise that Man City have been one of the most prolific sides in Europe this year once again. Pep Guardiola’s side scored 94 league goals last season and they are currently projected to beat that tally this season.

Erling Haaland’s been sidelined in recent weeks, but Kevin De Bruyne is back and all signs point to City gearing up for one of those title-defining, outrageously relentless winning runs.

The Nerazzurri currently top Serie A and they also lead the way for the most goals scored in the Italian top flight – having scored 20(!) more goals than title chasers Juventus. The highlight of their season so far was undoubtedly their 5-1 thumping of AC Milan at the San Siro.

In the absence of Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez has stepped up to the plate as Inter’s main man and has scored 18 goals so far.

It’s not taken long for Harry Kane to have an impact at his new club.

The England captain is the front-runner for the European Golden Shoe, and has already scored more goals than any player managed in the entirety of last season.

But there are goals throughout this Bayern team, with the likes of Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala chipping in with a healthy number.

Fifty-two goals is a terrifyingly strong return from just 16 games played.
