The 2026-27 Serie A campaign is still in its infancy, but matchday three is throwing up two blockbuster meetings between the league's heavyweights.
On Sunday, Juventus face AC Milan, but before that, Saturday's headline fixture sees reigning champions Inter welcome Napoli to San Siro.
These teams have split the last four Serie A titles between them: Napoli won the Scudetto in 2023 and 2025, while Inter triumphed in 2024 and 2026.
Inter's title defence has started strongly. They have won both of their games by an aggregate score of 5-1 and sit second in the standings, behind Roma on goal difference.
Here, using Opta insights, we run through all the key storylines and players to watch ahead of this eagerly anticipated clash at the iconic San Siro.
What's expected?
Inter's perfect start to the season has them seen as the favourites to take all three points, as least as far as the Opta supercomputer is concerned.
Across its 10,000 data-led simulations ahead of Saturday's clash, Cristian Chivu's side were victorious in 56.2% of scenarios, while Napoli's chances are rated at 19.7%.
The likelihood of a draw is 24.1%, though both sides have enjoyed success in this fixture over the years.
Inter are the team to have won the second-most games (W70 D42 L48) and scored the second-most goals (229) against Napoli in Serie A.
For both metrics, only Juventus have a better record (72 wins and 232 goals for the Bianconeri against Napoli in the competition).
However, Napoli are unbeaten in their last five Serie A matches against Inter (W1 D4) and have only once registered a longer run without defeat against the Nerazzurri in the three-points-for-a-win era: between May 2013 and November 2015 (W3 D3).
But Napoli have lost 51 away Serie A matches against Inter (W9 D20), more than against any other side; the Nerazzurri are also the opponents against whom Napoli have conceded the most away goals in the top flight (148).
After a run of four consecutive goalless matches between 2016 and 2018, Inter have scored in all of their last 16 Serie A meetings against Napoli. No team has ever gone 17 consecutive matches scoring against the Partenopei in the competition (Juventus also had 16 between 1986 and 1993, and Bologna between 1935 and 1942).
These teams have drawn each of their last three Serie A meetings at San Siro but have never recorded four consecutive draws at the Nerazzurri's home in the top flight.
Can Calhanoglu keep Inter perfect against his favourite opposition?
After wins over Monza and Cagliari, Inter have set the pace at the summit, and they will be looking to maintain their momentum at the top of the standings.
They are looking to win their first three Serie A matches of the season, a feat they last achieved in the 2023-24 campaign.
The Nerazzurri could also score at least six goals in their first three matchdays for the eighth consecutive year, having last failed to do so in 2018-19 (five goals).
This clash sees two teams who are more than capable in possession go head-to-head. Indeed, Napoli and Inter lead Serie A this term for build-up attacks, with 13 and 11 respectively.
Both teams are continuing the trend from last season, which saw Inter finish first (165) and Napoli third (124), with Juventus placed between them (139). A build-up attack is an open-play sequence containing 10 or more passes that ends in a shot or a touch in the opposition box. So, expect plenty of prodding and probing.
Integral to Inter's possession play is defender Alessandro Bastoni, who leads the division this season for carries (53), passes (208) and open play build-up involvements (116, excluding shots and chances created).
Hakan Calhanoglu, meanwhile, has been involved in six goals (five goals, one assist) in his nine Serie A matches against Napoli for Inter, after failing to score or assist in his previous five encounters against them for Milan.
The playmaker has already scored in the first two matchdays of this season and is looking to become the first Inter midfielder to score in each of the first three seasonal Serie A games in the three-points-for-a-win era.
De Bruyne aiming to shine in McTominay's absence
Napoli have been dealt a blow this week by news that talisman Scott McTominay will be out of action for around a month, as he needs to undergo a minor heart procedure.
With no McTominay, the onus will be on Kevin De Bruyne to spark Napoli's attack.
De Bruyne leads Napoli for key passes (six) across the first two matches of the season, while he has also scored and provided an assist in their season-opening win over Genoa.
That goal was the Belgian's 101st in Europe’s top five leagues.
This clash also marks an immediate return to San Siro for former Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has won one and lost one of his opening two league games in charge of Napoli.
Inter are the opponent Allegri has faced the joint-most in his managerial career in Serie A, along with Fiorentina and Lazio (29 times). He has got the better of the Nerazzurri 12 times in the top tier.
That 41.4% win ratio is Allegri's poorest against any team he has faced more than three times in the competition.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Inter – Hakan Calhanoglu
Calhanoglu is the only midfielder to have scored more than one goal in each of the last 14 seasons across Europe's top five leagues, since his debut in these competitions, back in 2013-14 with Hamburg.
In addition, since his Serie A debut in the 2017-18 season, Calhanoglu has scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in the competition (22), one more than Paulo Dybala and Ruslan Malinovskiy.
Napoli – Rasmus Hojlund
Hojlund has found the net in two consecutive Serie A home games for the second time in his career, following a spell between May and June 2023 with Atalanta, but he will be hoping to make an impact on the road.
But in three Serie A appearances against Inter, Hojlund has failed to find the back of the net, something he will be hoping to change this weekend.
