The Wrights: Goals in each of the past five decades

Stoke City striker D'Margio Wright-Phillips followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps by scoring his first professional goal against Fulham on Saturday in the Championship.

The 20-year-old made his professional debut on January 9 against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup and has gone on to feature regularly in the league, making his father Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandad Ian Wright very proud.

"Proud is beyond an understatement," Shaun Wright-Phillips said, describing watching son D'Margio make his debut in the FA Cup in a tweet.

"I've been blessed to play for some amazing teams and represent my country at the very highest level. But yesterday afternoon, I witnessed my son make his professional debut, and this I am most proud of."

Former Manchester City and Chelsea starlet Shaun Wright-Phillips played for a number of teams in the UK and USA. D'Margio's recent burst onto the scene has all the hallmarks of how his father started his own career and he followed up with words of advice.

"Keep grounded son and keep working hard and strive to be the best version of yourself possible, but, whatever chapters lie ahead, you can be extremely proud of what you have already achieved, because I am," he said.

The family tradition of goalscoring

The Wright family have been a part of English football for half a century, beginning with Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

D'Margio's grandfather played over 200 times for Crystal Palace between 1985 and 1991, when he moved to Arsenal and won the Premier League and two FA Cups for the Gunners. Ian Wright then had spells at West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Celtic and Burnley before retiring at the turn of the millennia with 239 career goals.

Shaun Wright-Phillips followed in similar style when he started at Manchester City in 1999. He made 153 appearances and scored 26 goals for City before moving to Chelsea in 2005.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips: Carving his own path

Stoke City's prodigy started off his youth career in the academy at Manchester City before being loaned out to Blackburn Rovers in 2020.

In February 2021, he signed for Stoke City and has impressed throughout his short time at the club, now being trusted to feature for the first team.
