Liverpool put Manchester United in their place, and Solskjaer on the ropes
If Sunday’s clash with Liverpool had been a boxing match, the referee would have called it off at half time.
By that point, Jurgen Klopp’s side had put four goals past a hapless and hopeless Manchester United side, in front of a stunned Old Trafford crowd.
But, it was not a boxing match, and so the torture continued for the Red Devils. Mohamed Salah completed his hat-trick and made it five in the process, before Paul Pogba saw red for an awful challenge on Naby Keita, who had to be stretchered off the pitch.
Liverpool took their foot off the throat of the opposition for the final half-hour, which in many ways was even more disrespectful than scoring more would have been. They knew Manchester United were not a threat.
The game left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job in the Old Trafford technical area by the faintest of threads, with The Telegraph reporting that the Norwegian has three games to save his job.
Paul Pogba sent off
As already mentioned, Paul Pogba saw red on the hour for a high and out-of-control challenge on Liverpool’s Naby Keita. While he has hit back at those who claimed he did it on purpose, it will certainly have consequences.
The Frenchman will now miss the next three domestic games, two of which are thought to be those in which Solskjaer needs a result in order to save his job. Pogba will sit out this weekend’s trip to Tottenham, as well as the encounter with Manchester City, before completing his ban by playing no role in United’s clash with Watford after the international break.
Solskjaer will be able to call on the mercurial talents of Pogba for the Champions League tie against Atalanta, but after Sunday’s events and with his job on the line, will he want to?
